I looked into it. From what I could tell for someone like me the Linux Mint would probably be better until I'm more used to Linux again.
That is taking over 3 hrs to download on DSL.
I'll download a copy of this also to have around. I have a computer to play with as soon as I get things off the hard drive that I lost when the partition goofed up.
I put the hard drive in a drawer a couple years ago and a few months ago my step daughter gave me a computer that only needs a hard drive. Just have not had time to mess with it.
A long time ago I bought a copy of Linux Mandrake 8 and was surprised at how easy it was to get around in but I never could get it to connect to the internet on my dial up and a computer that won't net is just useless to me.
I would like to get away from Windows but there are some things that I use with other people like PhotoShop and PowePoint that I don't seem be able to learn on other stuff and couldn't exchange with them.
You would think with PhotoShop I could use Gimp but I don't seem to get it. |

It ended up over 3 hours for Ubuntu to download! I know it's huge but it shouldn't have taken more than an hour judging by how fast other downloads are in sizes over 5o to 100 or more MB. I really do think Comcast is throttling down my speed on huge downloads.
There is an unplugged HDD in my backup PC, I think it has Win98 on it, I'm planning on plugging it in as the #1 drive, wipping it clean and install Ubuntu on there. I had Ubuntu 6 or 7 at one time and enjoyed playing with it. I installed a couple of browsers (importing my bookmarks via flashdrive), created my email accounts and a few programs, I could do everything I need to as far as basics went. Not sure I could ever get used to it being my only OS though. When I went to my main PC running XP it was like coming home from a visit! LOL

RB Comcast isn't the only one. I have AT&T express DSL. I"m suppose to run up to 1.5
I called and complained I was down to just over 500 sometimes 600 and they came out to the house.
The guy did a line test on the line into the modem and it said I was getting 1.5 (I saw the meter) and he was surprised cause he said I am 100 ft past the limit for that speed but they had laid new wiring.
My modem was going out and he gave me a new one off the truck, sure enough it picked up to 1.2 and I was ok with that.
Things went well for a week then slowed down to 768 which is the highest for their basic package, it would speed up and slow down which is expected on DSL.
Within another couple weeks I was constant never above 768 and never have gone back up.
I am going to call one day when I have a whole day to mess with them and complain again.
I told the guy they wanted me to go UVerse at 3.5 and he said they were lying there was no way I could get that speed here. |

I downloaded from the link NR gave a while ago (TI), almost 100MB, and it took 3 minutes. It figures that I should have been able to download the 700MB in 21 minutes instead of 3 hours.
However, I noticed that downloading TI the speed was between 525 and 575 KB and at times even higher. When I downloaded Ubuntu the other day the speeds never got anywhere near that high, they were as low as 45KB and the highest I got was around 180-190.
If it wasn't Comcast at fault then the server feeding out the Ubuntu file was extremely slow or busy. Wouldn't matter how fast I can download if it's coming in at a trickle it will take as long as the trickle takes to get it to me. LOL
I would think if the fault was with wiring or the modem the slowness would be consistent but it isn't.

Anyone install this Ubuntu 10.04?? I need help. Lots of help! LOL
OK, I have Ubuntu installed and running. It comes with Firefox installed. I had to install Flash and now I need to install Java but can't find just what I need. It says version 11 doesn't use Sun anymore, or words to that effect. The Ubuntu Store has tons of Java this and Java that but I can't make sense of what I really need. I installed one Java that appeared to be "general" in nature but the Jigzone puzzles won't load so it must not be the right one.

OK, have the Java worked out and installed. Installed Thunderbird and configured email. I have auto log in when I boot up. NOW someone please tell me how to keep Ubuntu from asking for my password every time I turn around! Driving me crazy. If the machine is idle for a few minutes the screen goes black and when I more the mouse I'm asked for my password. If I want to download anything I'm asked for my password. If I want to install anything I'm asked for my password. Any kind of administrative action and I'm asked for my password. This has GOT to stop! LOL
