The backwards compatibility of new operating systems has been a constant thorn in Microsoft's side. With Vista, the compatibility problems at launch were so great it never really stood a chance of convincing cautious consumers and ultra-conservative businesses, with the result that many of them are still happily running Windows XP.
When the release candidate build of Windows 7 appeared in May 2009, Microsoft surprised almost everyone by announcing a solution: Windows XP Mode. On paper, this gives the new OS 100 per cent backwards compatibility with XP, so you can run all your old software on Windows 7. Looks like w7 is a broken os just like vista. Maybe they should rebrand xp to w8 and then have a product that actually works right.
They only give this optional download is for Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate and Enterprise editions and XP Mode will only work on PCs with a CPU with hardware-assisted virtualisation support. |

  Man, I like the way you think, Dave!! I wish you worked for MS.
Yeah, that virtual stuff makes my brain weep. LOL Blake understands it but I'm just wading through making splashes.
I did have Win7 installed on a spare HDD and messed with it on my backup PC but I wanted my backup back so disconnected it.
I went the virtual way but with Win7 not XP. And I used Sun Virtual Box not the Microsoft one

I installed it on my main machine (that is running XP) and then installed Win7 into the Virual Box. I also tried to install Win98 but couldn't get that to work. Anyway, I can open Sun Virtual Box anytime I want to and launch Win7 and mess around with it. At the same time I can keep using my XP without missing a beat.
It's really neat the way it works! Blake has 6 or 7 operating systems installed in his.

I think it is hilarious that M$ is having to resort to providing an XP Mode in W7 to convince people to stop using XP and pay to upgrade to W7. Why would anyone bother? If you have XP installed now, keep it and save your money. If you have tried Vista and didn't like it, you won't like W7 either, unless of course you switch to XP Mode. So you might as well stick with what you are happy with and not waste your money on another crappy M$ OS...

| Luckily my w7 is free. I doubt I ever install it though. I can live with vista on my laptops since they are for internet use only. |
