It appears to be having the same symptoms as my last compac laptop, it blacks out. After looking in help I downloaded a bios update and it is making the fan run more. I hope this fixes it. I also saw in their forum a lot of people are having problems with mb as I did before on the old one. They have a recall but my model isn't listed. I only have had this for 18 months. It is 6 months out of warranty.

Well if it was rebooting I'd say heat but you say it blacks out .....?  Sounds like a graphics/video problem?  Still could be heat. Since you said the BIOS upgrade caused the fans to run faster I would say they were written to correct a heat problem. Sometimes it just take trial and error to figure out what's going on.

Had something like that happen with my old desktop and after much trial and error of swapping out components it turned out to be the PSU.

It doesn't make the fan run faster, it makes it run during idle/slow times occasionally.

It just went black. After I rebooted and it went black again after a few minutes.

It worked ok last nite but I wasn't on very long, an hour maybe. I did notice the fan running, seems it was quiet before the update or I wasn't paying attention to the fan running.

Here is what I updated:

2.    ... ( sp41601 )....

The new BIOS release for your notebook PC is preventative in nature to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support.

And you said your laptop is not listed?  If not and should you still experience the blackouts after the BIOS update I sure would contact them about that.  They may include your laptop in the Service Enhancement offer.

I will try that but I have little hope. I imagine those were more expensive computers.

It is burned up, I was only on for ten minutes tonite and it blacked out/shutdown and I can smell something burning. Its the same problem as last one, mb. They have another compac at staples right now for $350 but I cannot do that again. I can get a toshiba at walmart for $500. I will see about getting an extended warranty if I do that. My daughter has had hers for 8 years or more. I've had it with hp compac laptops.

Now I will see what I can get in ebay for broken computer, I got $100 last time but I included a new power supply/fan and that cost me about $9 with shipping. The battery is like new, never used really.

LOL, yes I think they have conceded that some time ago.  Ever since the release of the testing version of Windows 7 it's been said anyone buying a Vista machine now would get a free upgrade to Windows 7 once it hit the street.

So there really isn't any need to wait for the release of Windows 7 before buying a PC.

They don't want people to buy a PC now and be locked into using Vista for 5 or more years.  They want as many people to switch to the newest OS ASAP but since W7 has not been officially released yet, they don't want people to stop buying PCs until W7 is released, so they offer this option so no one will have to wait.  Vista was a real dog for M$, so they are rushing to get W7 out.  I'm afraid that W7 is going to prove to be a dog for M$ too.  Unless they have made a lot of improvements to it from the trial version, W7 is an OS to avoid, just like ME and Vista.  I see no good reason for anyone to rush out and upgrade, especially if they are still using XP or W2K.  They will be sorry if they spend the money and "upgrade" to W7...

Unfortunately, HP equipment is junk.  So was Compaq before HP purchased it.  I would never intentionally buy an HP PC or scanner.  HP scanners are designed to fail shortly after the warranty expires.  HP PCs are a PITA to work on and they install junky components.  HP does make decent laser printers though...

Computers are still available with XP loaded.

Here

Laptops with XP

I don't know what "Off-Least" means.

Here are more

But keep in mind some if not most of these PCs may not be upgradeable to Windows 7 later on and it's still questionable just how long MS will support XP with updates.
