Web citizens trying to kill Internet Explorer 6
(CNN) -- Some Web designers are staging an online revolt against an old version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, which they say is hampering the ability of the Web to move forward in a cool and interactive way.
The designers say Internet Explorer 6, which was released in 2001 and since has been updated twice by Microsoft Corp., is crippling the Internet's potential and slowing down the online experience. They also blame IE 6 for giving webmasters a collective headache, because they have to write special "hacks" into Web code to accommodate an outmoded browser.
Wonder how many people still HAVE to use IE 6? I guess anyone using W98, uh?

| Well I fortunately don't have to use ie6 but I also am all for making things accessable for the poor folks who are technically behind due to economic reasons or just a lack of knowledge. You can't just cut them out for convenience sake.... |

That's what they are trying to avoid, if they do away with it then people are forced to upgrade (which is free) and then people who do all the hard work won't have to do extra just because people won't upgrade. They could just make the changes and say heck with the feet draggers that don't upgrade, but they are considerate to everyone, thus the problem.
People don't appreciate how much work it is for the web builders. |

The problem is that IE7 and IE8 probably won't install on the older Windows versions. So for many people to update to a newer version of IE, they would have to pay a lot of money and time to upgrade their PCs to a newer OS. And if they are running an older version of the OS, it is possible that their hardware will be incompatible with the newer OSes. Most likely, they may only be able to buy and try to install XP or Vista. So for those, their only choice would be to buy a newer computer, which may not be in their budget...
If they do kill IE6, it may push a lot of people off of the Internet. You would be surprised at how many people are still using W95, W98, ME, and W2K. I'm sure it is still in the millions. That's not something that can be ignored...

Yes I would be surprised if many used them. They can buy newer computers pretty cheap these days. with xp. I bought a large dell for $50 with xp and lots of extra hardware.
I did not know that newer ie7 & 8 wouldn't install on w98. Why would ms make a browser that wouldn't work on their own os? Dumb. |

I'm sure many of those who continue to use older equipment and software could buy new. But if I was in their shoes, I wouldn't want someone making that choice for me. I would be very angry if someone made my perfectly good running PC obsolete. That's basically what they did to my DVD/VCR player when they switched to digital and I am still pretty angry about that...

M$ does not support W95, W98, ME, or W2K any longer. They no longer test their software to see if it works in those platforms. They don't want anyone using those older OSes any longer. They want people to pay and upgrade to XP and Vista. Those who continue to use the older OSes are delaying funding M$ and M$ doesn't like to be held back. It is not in M$'s best interest to make it easy for you to stay with the older software...

| Well pushing ppl to buy a newer larger faster pc for a low price would be doing them a favor. There is people who would use w95 100 years from now if they weren't pushed into upgrading at some point. |

I use IE 6. I haven't upgraded because when I tried to once it messed up everything.
If I do upgrade can I turn off the tabs? I can turn them off in FF. I hate tabs. |

OMG How can you live without tabs? I always have a few open. I open an extra tab even when I don't need it, to have it ready. It's such a good idea they all have tabs now I think. I know ff does. I suppose if you have dialup you may only want one site open, its been a long time since I had that. You can have it set to only open one tab when starting up, I have one pc that opens one, the others open two tabs to start.
I don't use IE anymore, only rarely. |
