My roller on mouse quit working, something in the mouse broke and now thw wheel spins real easy and doesn't do anything.  So I tried another mouse and it didn't work at all and my keyboard quit working after that. I think the mouse caused something to burn up. I see there are two encasings that plug into mboard, one for mouse and one for keyboard. Does anyone know anything about this? I imagine HP will want hundreds of dollars for parts no matter how small. This couldn't be the end of my favorite pc could it?

Dam now I'm left with crappie vista and i can't stand it, I just can't use it.

I found where others have had this problem with xp, its over my head but they said one might be able to use a usb adapter to get by and I just recently gave my old pc away, with my only adapter, my mouse and extra keyboard. Not I'm screwed till I buy two usb adapters.

Lots of things to consider. I doubt anything burned out on the mobo. There are so many different type ways to connect a mouse and keyboard.  I think they pretty much work independently.  My keybaord is a wireless and my mouse is USB.

Is your mouse and keyboard wireless?

The connections on the back of the PC you're talking about are probably PS/2. Usually one is purple and one is an aqua green.  They are color coded to match the color of the mouse and keyboard plugs.

Mice and keyboards also come with USB plugs.  Sometimes the USB capability has to be turned on in the BIOS before they will work.

I'm sure with a little troubleshooting you can fix this problem with the keyboard. Will another keyboard work on that PC?  If anther keyboard works than nothing is burned out on the mobo.

OK, I see by your second post that you have PS/2 plugs on your mouse and keyboard.  Or is it the other way around?

I'm sorry, I haven't had a spare minute lately, andrew has been sick and I can't do anything durinf the day.

It was my connection, I wiggled the wires and the keyboard started working again. The mouse wheel is broke but I can get by till I buy a new one. I did plug my other keyboard in and it didn't work either but a little wiggling did the trick in the end. What a relief.

Some one wrote this in a group I belong to, I shouldn't but oh well, today is one of those days I make a lot of people mad so might as well:

"here is something that most people don't know to do.
I have windows xp,so this may not work for those that do not have xp, but you can check anyway.

Click on my computer
click the Local Drive C
Clikc Documents and Settings
inside that folder you should see a
folder with your name or default user
if you do not see that, click tools, then on folder options
click the tab at the top that says view
now scroll down in the window there and when
you see view all files and folders
put a check in that box

you should see a folder that you can
click on, and inside that folder, you
will click on Local
inside that folder click on Temporary Internet Files

at the top, click on Edit, Select All
then right click on one of the files and select
Delete
you may want to put a short cut to that folder
on your desk top, so you can reach it quickly.

one main reason you need to find that folder is
1. so you can delete all contents
2. viruses like to hide in that folder
and you can delete it there

I empty that folder every night,

you may think you are emptying that same folder
when you just click on a web page, at the top
on tools internet options, and delete your cookies and files, but that one folder will still contain everything you have looked at on your computer, so don't be fooled, into thinking you have deleted your internet files, because if you go to that folder I directed you to, you will see a ton of things still in there.
at the top, then "
