I bought a pdf convertor on ebay the otherday, and I found it is a free open source program. I don't think its legal to sell it, but if I wanted to give it away, how do I offer an installer like the one I bought? I imagine I have to add files to my website db, so to be sure perhaps someone can help me before I try? I have some screens shots:
First, here is what I downloaded:
and I put it in this folder:
Here it is in my program files, I already had it installed so I think these were already in here, but I think i would have to load all these files, plus the installer in folder shown above into my website db? Then the url would start the installment?

Interesting question, Dave. But I have to tell you I don't have a clue ....
Hopefully some one else does and will come along with the answer shortly.
If it was me I would just post a link to the download page on the net.

If you have all the files for the program and if it doesn't make any registry changes, why would you need an installer? You could simply zip it up and make it available for download. Of course you would want to maintain any folder structure required by the program...
Fishead, if you need an installer though, I have the tools necessary to create one for you...

Sorry, we're having xmas today so couldn't get away.
Nr, I need an installer so I can sell software that will install after they buy in ebay. Ebay has a digital download option I use for ebooks, but I'm not sure how the structure works for software downloads. I just found out that I can legally sell software from open source so I want to do this. Could you help me out, maybe a step by spep what to do?
Here is what I have-
Do I put all those in a zipped folder and upload, then get the URL to list in ebays digital download option? |

Are you sure you're going to be able to sell Open Source software? That definitely violates all the rules to using and distributing Open Source code. Unless you have made major revisions to the underlying code, I'm not sure how you will be able to get around the Open Source rules since you had nothing to do with developing the software nor has the developer(s) given you permission to sell the code...
If you have all the code to the program, place the program folder in the root of one of your partitions. Then you can use something like Winzip to archive all the files and folders. Make sure you include the Save Full Path info, Include Subfolders, and Include System and Hidden files options before importing the files and folders:
If you have done it correctly, you should be able to see the full path for the files and folders in Winzip. It may display differently in other archiving programs, so you may have to look around or test Extract the files to see what happens...

Nr, I threw everything in a zipped folder and uploaded and it works, but the install favicon doesn't show. What did I do wrong, or should I not worry about it?
anyway, it appears to have load ok.

Nr, thats what I thought but someone is telling me different and I just checked and found this:
Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things...

I do not want to sell it unless its legal. |

Phil, Thanks for sharing that. I found pdfcreator in there!
I was looking and it doesn't appear to be legal to sell it. I am trying to get it on my db so maybe I can offer it for free to members in here, or perhaps I can just give them a link to it by message or something. I do wish I could sell it but I won't if its illegal. I'm just glad I'm only out $4 and I did get more in the package that has helped me get access to more ebooks to sell and read.
Dave,
OpenSource Projects can be sold, but you cannot claim rights to them. The way most sell them is digital downloads, but I feel there would be a large market for dial-up users, who would like a CD filled with great programs they DID NOT have to download for $4.95-$9.95 plus S&H.
Research OpenSource Project for information on rights.
