I am looking into this. I just don't get it why people need to hide under a cloak of their IP address, which only gives people the area of their provider and little else. This area could be hundreds of miles, so basically it only tells what country they live in.

Anyway, I am trying to figure out how to show IPs in my forum just to see if it can be done. I know a lot of websites show IPs to have a little control over troublemakers, but I don't know about phpbb forums.

Here is one post from another forum:

"Posted by Karen [69-18-1-201.lisco.net at 69.18.1.201] on March 12, 2004 at 20:47:07:

Can this be a problem because:

Statistics show that 1/8 of Americans are victim of identity theft. If this forum's user whose ip address is exposed and this user
1) is using Microsoft Windows
2) doesn't spend time or money to protect their computer( eg. install firewall on the computer)
3) have hi-speed internet
4) didn't actively apply security patch from microsoft

Then a hacker can easily see everything on his computer by using that IP address?

Or, is it one of the best ways to prevent spamming and or unwated posters?

Thanks in advance

Yes, what you say is true but any website owner can view the users IP address. You can also see the IP address when someone sends you email. It would be foolish for anyone to think they are safe because they don't see their IP address posted on your forum.

Instead of seeing this as a threat to their safety, it would be a better idea to view it as a wake-up call to those who never realized they could be tracked by a number while online. "

Dave, the post should tell you something.  People NEED to worry about identity theft, it's a big problem right now.

A lot of people use proxies to connect to the internet for safely and protection.  To keep sites they visit from placing cookies and spyware on their PC.  Using proxies is respectable, there is nothing wrong with it, Dave.  Please don't make it sound sleazy or something unethical.  It's not.

As you said yourself to the average user the IP numbers doesn't tell much anyway, just gives a general locaton and that's usually for the Provider, the actual user could be a hundred miles away.

This says it all:

a wake-up call to those who never realized they could be tracked by a number while online. "

I have thought about using a proxie myself but have never gotten around to seeing into it.

I think you have it twisted rb. That website lists karen's ip, they are not saying to beware of ip showing, they warn sleazy people to beware, you can't go around invisable.

IPs can be changed and hidden if one knows how, like hackers, but the average joe just uses a sleazy website for a cheap cover. Am I wrong? I know spammers and people who send virouses can't be traced because they know how to cover their tracks. I also know I have seen where I can configure my own ips.

I will look into it some more if I get time, but I think you need to read that post again, you sound like that girl karen without the reply.

I will be posting info as I get it to shed some light on the subject:

When you search on Google, your ip address and the time are stored in their database forever, as well as the subject searched. This inforation can be used against you in the court of law. Google will willingly allow authorities to consult their database, as you can see in the video below. When you search on Google through Googlonymous, it is Googlonymous that goes on Google and does the search for you. So the only ip address that Google will see belongs to Googlonymous, and Googlonymous does not keep record anything in its database (Googlonymous is not actually connected to any database). You can now search without a care in the world 100% anonymous.
Click play on the video below to see a fascninating documentary showing the dangers of searching on Google.

OK Dave, so far you have shown and proved the dangers of having your true IP being shown!  So isn't it to one's benefit to hide our IP?  Googlonymous does just that.  Are you suggesting we shouldn't use Googlonymous?  Aren't you saying it's a good idea to hide one's IP number?

You're confusing me.

watch the movie, it isn't ips to worry about so much as a lot of other things.

Here's another site:

Countering IP Propaganda

The session was intiated with a recognition of the fact that The global debate on IP is also shaped significantly by the constant bombardment of different myths about IP. Some of these include the fact that the creative industries will die without a strong IP regime, that IP is beneficial for developing countries and also that there are large losses caused by IP theft. These myths circulate in different for a, from newspapers to reports to mass media. They are also targeted at different people from enforcers, to industry to parents and even in some cases to children directly.

As a response to these propoganda, there have also been a number of responses which attempt to counter and subvert some of these dominant messages. An instance of this is the counter film festival intiated as a response to the one organized by Microsoft called Thought Thieves. There are also the WIPO IP comics which have been countered.

We also recognize that while a lot of debate on IP takes place at the level of political economy and policy, there is actually very little by way of a detailed study of the ways in which discursive frameworks around IP get constructed, and what are the ways in which these can be countered as well. ....

ok heres an outfit selling "hide my IP" and here is why you should buy their product: (Now give it your best sales pitch):

http://www.hide-my-ip-address.com/hideip/?pu=false&srec=true

Q. Why do I need to hide my IP address?

Because everything you do online is linked with your IP address, which can be instantly connected back to you!

That means EVERYTHING. E-mail messages, Web sites, images, file downloads, EVERYTHING.
Can you imagine receiving an official legal summons from the head of the BMI legal department -- because you downloaded a simple music file? Or losing your job because of that “anonymous” e-mail you sent to a certain someone?

Or maybe you downloaded something you shouldn’t have – and DON'T wish to be caught??

By hiding your IP address, you shield yourself from problems.

You GUARANTEE that all of your Internet use really IS totally anonymous. If you're a smart user, you know that you really MUST hide your IP address – and you can do that INSTANTLY, with Hide My IP Address.

To configure TCP/IP settings
Open Network Connections.
Click the connection you want to configure, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
Do one of the following:
If the connection is a local area connection, on the General tab, under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
If this is a dial-up, VPN, or incoming connection, click the Networking tab. In This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
Do one of the following:
If you want IP settings to be assigned automatically, click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.
If you want to specify an IP address or a DNS server address, do the following:
Click Use the following IP address, and in IP address, type the IP address.
Click Use the following DNS server addresses, and in Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.
To configure DNS, WINS, and IP Settings, click Advanced.
Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
You should use automated IP settings (DHCP) whenever possible, for the following reasons:
DHCP is enabled by default.
If your location changes, you do not have to modify your IP settings.
Automated IP settings are used for all connections, and they eliminate the need to configure settings such as DNS, WINS, and so on.

address securityIf you are using a nonregistered IP address (or an address that InterNIC has reserved for private networks such as the 10.x.y.z range), you can route through the Internet by providing a valid public IP address. Inside the virtual private network (VPN) envelope are packets with your address and the destination private address. Because the packet is encrypted, the addresses you specify on the remote private network are protected. The Internet only sees the public IP address. For organizations with nonconforming internal IP addresses, the repercussions of this are substantial, as no administrative costs are associated with having to change IP addresses for remote access.
