Transferring domain names is complex. I decided I want to keep fisheadtackle and disolve fisheadcartoons in the future. Its harder than I thought. IX won't except transfers so I had to find a registrar, and there is a million to chose from in all price ranges. I am going with godaddy, (even thou they framed my website awhile back). There is many others but most want you to host site with them. I signed up for 5 years. No questions yet, just thought I'd share what I'm doing.

Dave, I'm still rather green about this domain name business. I always thought it didn't matter where you registered your domain name. After all what's there about it to "service"? I look at it as a shelf where you store your domain name nothing more. And you pay them for the privilege

You may not know it, but you can change domain registrars at any time. It's actually not very complicated at all.

rb, homestead is holding my name, and I have to close my account down or they will keep charging me like they already did for 2 years, and at $300. I will have to take a 200 dollar loss to get my name from them and my old site closed, thats how they operae, I hate em.

For one thing, they keep changing my address as fishhead@homestead .com and other reasons why I'm leaving them. They cannot transfer websites since they are made with java, so that is why I had to start from scratch.

Anyway, following HS's instrucions on how to transfer my name, they gave me a link to a website that has a list of domain registrars, and that is where I strted my search; it is a well known list that rates each one and has a standard they must meet to be listed. I am following their directions, not just running doing whatever.

I have to have some place to take hold my name the way I understand it. There are hundreds, most all are also webhosts, thats why I don't know why IX diesn't do it.

Anyway, godaddy was one of the lowest in price. They did try to sell me other stuff, they have a lot to offer, thats why they are so cheap. I did some research first and I thought they had the best deal. Its too late to switch to other.

I thought the same thing, that it should be free, but thats not the way it is.

They also tried to sell me davidtackett,com and had a sales pitch that I had better buy it before someone else does, and thats the type of thing they try to make money off of. They also host websites and at a decent price.

I just wanted to share this info to help others understand, I learn as I go and willing to share. Here is the sight homestead recomended to find a registrar:

Ya fun, right now when you click on fisheadtackle.com you get a homestead page saying this site discontinued.

In my firstpage images won't show, so I contacted IX, then saw I needed to turn on my FTP for that site, but still wouldn't work, then went back and read emails to see if I missed anything and I did, one email from 2cows said I could switch right away by going here and filling out form, so I did that and now it should be in process but it is still not working yet. I did that after 5 so maybe this morning they will do it.

I called homestead and talked to ceop, he got smart with me so I told him how HS treated me so bably and he had little to say in defense. They are a .... bad host.

What a pain, its a hard thing to do to switch, harder than I expected. Like switching image URLs, it takes time to get it all organized, its like starting over except the pages are otherwise all setup.

It never did start up. So much for the instant turn on. I think it will turn on today at 1600 hours as tucows said it will do if I don't reply. I don't know what happened. Anyway I think all is in order.

godaddy called on the phone yesterday. said all is fine then tried to sell me a hosting service, but I declined, then they asked if I wanted private or public. He said the private would protect my name and email from spammers. Siad it was a $8.95 a year, but that was total including my registrar fee of $6.95. I said yes but he said he would bill my c-card $38 dollars and I told him to forget it. Then he saw I used paypal so he couldn't have charged me anyway. This was shady. Now I worry. I did get one spam in email. I wrote the ceo a letter telling him about this and let him know about the phishing godaddy was doing with my website. I told him I can send them a lot of customers if they treat me right, or I can tell a lot of people if they don't, so I am writing this to make their behavior public.

If my site isn't turned on tomorrow I may flip out and start trying to find out why. I am pretty sure everything was done in IX. I have the folders and site and everything in place. I am finished with godaddy, that is done and ready. So its in tucows, if not then I am going to look at homestead. Right now the domain name is still pointing at them. They better not be fking with me. I hate homestead, they really did hurt my business and cost me hundreds of dollars. Now maybe my business can actually grow since I got away from them.

Dave, you have numbers that stand for the same thing as your domain name. Type that number into the address bar and if you don't get your index page something is wrong.

This is what I'm talking about: If you type (or copy and paste) 71.18.137.203 into the address bar you will get my index page. It's a bunch of machinary

You will find your number in the Control panel, also they should have emailed you those numbers also.

rb, the page will open using my ip.

I found what was wrong, I needed to switch my server urls to ix in godaady control panel. I did that and ix says it will take a day or two to take affect, so I am waiting. Maybe today or tomorrow for sure it should be on line.

There is one other problem and I asked godaddy about it, my tech info has homestead listed and it should be iX. I tried to change it, I unlocked and added my own address and info since I couldn't find any address or email for IX, but it said there was an error and refused to let me change or remove homestead. So I asked IX and godaddy about it, but I think those two will have contact now that I have everything in place and that should change without my dong anything.

Otherwise it looks like all is ready to go. I did list fisheadtackle as a pointer to fisheadcartoons while I was in godaddy, so expect that to happen. Anyway, the wait was errors on my end, no one else.
