Ella, has a problem.   All her browsers quit working.  She can connect to the internet, open a browser but the page won't load, links don't work.

I've run across this before but can't off hand remember what it is.  I think there is a download you can get off the net that repairs something or other ....

Geezzzzzzzz, anyone else ever have this problem or knows what that utility is  called.....  win something or other.

HELP PLEASE!

I don't think that's her problem.  After disabling Zone Alarm all browser began working.  dontknow

She tells me the browsers all had check marks by them in ZA but she also said that Winsocks had all red Xs!    ?????  Uh?

I don't have Winsocks listed in my ZoneAlarm.  Now I don't know what to think.  Winsock.exe is suppose to be spyware.  Bad spyware.

Not sure what advice to give here.  If she leaves ZA disabled so her browsers will work and if that Winsocks she speaks of is spyware won't it be allowed to run?

Zone Alarm is that her firewall protection?  I have not used that one I use norton but sounds like maybe the settings for her ZA are set to high and blocking her browsers to connect to the internet.  She might want to read her ZA manual and see how she can change the settings or maybe try uninstalling ZA then installing it back again.

also here are some sites about Winsocks maybe she or you can find somthing here to help you.

WinSocks Adware is likely spyware and as such, presents a serious vulnerability which should be fixed immediately! Delaying the removal of winsocks.exe may cause serious harm to your system and will likely cause a number of problems, such as slow performance, loss of data or leaking private information.

let me know if this helps Smile

Thank you, Jaddon.  Ella did a search and winsocks.exe.exe (as listed in ZA) is nowhere on her system.  It is in ZA and blocked to prevent it from getting on or using her machine.  That part is good.  And one reason I don't like to see ZA disabled.

As to why her browsers quit working all of a sudden is somewhat of a mystery.  They are shown as having access in ZA.  Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has access.  Apparently winsock.dll (in winnit/system32) is ok since she can access the internet once ZA is disabled

The question is why does ZA need to be disabled in order for browsers to work.  There was nothing added or changed when this occurred.  Everything was fine when she shut the PC down and later when she booted up the browsers didn't work.

Zone Alarm Forum has two threads about this problem and so far they have not found a solution for the victims! LOL  We have already tried all they suggest and are waiting to see if they come up with more.

HERE IS ONE

AND HERE IS THE OTHER

Thanks for the effort and suggestions, Jaddon.  And I'm not sure what her security settings are but will find out next time I talk to her.  Too high settings could be the problem.

Wish her the best of luck wish I could help more.  I don't use ZA so I really dont know much about it.  Maybe she might want to try a different firewall.  I have been using Norton for a few years now - I know some people dont like it at all but I have always had good luck since I use it.  We have use Norton internet sercurity which includes antivirus, firewall and anti spam protection for all 4 of our computers and since using it we have had no problems (knocks on wood)

Ella still has ZA disabled, or did the last time I talked to her about it.  I'll have to check with her and see if she has tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I know we talked about it but not sure what she did.  She is on dial up so it's not as dangerous as being on DSL without ZA but still I would like for her to find a way to keep it enabled.

It's funny how some of  these problems will effect a few but not all.  Not only Zone Alarm but most all other programs

I think the reverse is now true, that it's more dangerous on dialup than on broadband (DSL or cable) if you have a router. The router's firewall and IP masking keep your individual computer's IP address, and it, hidden from the Internet and hackers/crackers. When you're on dialup, your computer's IP address, and thus your computer, is on the Internet.

Many of the current viruses attack through open ports. A good firewall closes all ports except what's needed for your Internet access. Without a firewall, those ports may be open to attack.
