Yes it should open right away, that's not right. Moving data is another thing. Not sure this will help you with your problem Dave but it's worth a try.
Also in another place I read where a guy said you may need Vista specific drivers installed. I guess anything is possible with a PC these days. LOL In Device Manager (while the external drive is connected) in Disk Drives right click the external drive, then properties and see if you can get Vista to "Update Drivers".

This is weird, paypal withheld the transfer, then canceled payment so hp hasn't been paid yet. I imagine they will be calling again.

I was going to call hp, but he called just before I did and he thought I returned it but I didn't, I just got it. I told him the authorization to pay had expired and he said he wouldn't worry about it. So I didn't ask about the 1 year warranty that I have no paper work on and hp site has warranty as expired still.
