OK, we have determined that that the DVD burner is not working. There is no way on God's green earth it will burn a DVD. It's possible it has never worked. Until recently Bobby had never tried it out.
Going shopping, going shopping ......
Bobby told his nephew if he was a real good boy Bobby would let HIM installted the new one in the case!
Isn't that Bobby some super uncle? They just don't come any better!

So you're saying that the DVD is broken? Didn't Bobby just buy that recently? It's hard enough when everything works as advertised. When you can't trust what you buy to work, then it makes troubleshooting a whole lot more difficult...

Both players/recorders were installed when the PC was built.

Warranty?
If there was it has long since run out. Bobby said shortly after he got the PC he realized that one of the burners (maybe both) didn't work. His Nephew came over to look at it and found they were wired up wrong.
I don't know if being wired wrong might have damaged it or if it didn't work to begin with. Like I said Bobby until recently didn't have an occasion to burn a DVD so it's hard to say how long it hasn't been working.

I wonder how they wired it up wrong? That's pretty hard to do...

I think what Bobby was talking about was the ribbon/cable was plugged in wrong. The edge with the red wire didn't match the #1 prong.

I never like to correct someone better-looking, smarter, nicer and in general just a better person than me but..........it ws my USB ports on the front that were inoperative. My nephew, Joey, came over and found that the USB wires were not paired correctly. He unhooked them and hooked them back up correctly ans I had operable USB ports on the front again. I had my computer built in November of 2003 and had never used my : Drive until last November when my Brother-in-Law, Bobby, died. Yes another Bobby. There are 6 Bobbys in our immediate family. When I tried to play the Funeral Home DVD was when I first discovered that "D" didn't work correctly. I tried making a copy of that DVD and was unable to. During all of this search for my problem with DVD copying that Funeral Home DVD got inadvertantly named The Bear. Later when I was trying to copy my real The Bear movie it added confusion to the discussions that we were having. Sorry. Rosalie, after we talked yesterday morning i found the CD that I had recorded with those Funeral Home pictures of Bobby. My research assistant (Mrs. Bobby) looked every were for it and she finally found it. In the most obvious place! Right in front of me on my computer desk. I originally put the contents of that DVD (Using DVDShrink) on my "C" Drive (HD) in a folder called ?. Yes that's right , The Bear. I opened up that folder with 6 files within and recorded just the Video portion on to a CD. I can play it and all the pictures will displey. I don't remember if the Audio will play but I suspect not because I didn't D/L that file.
Now, Do any of you have a reccomendation as to what drive I need to get to replace my shot "D" Drive and where to buy it? I want a combination DVd reader and burner and a CD reader and burner. Do I need one of those new Double-layer burners to keep up with the latest technology? Copying DVDs will be a some-time thing. I will not be doing it very often. I would like one that will play "The Yellow Rose Of Texas" in the background but that is not a set-in-stone requirement. Bobby #1 (me) will appreciate any reccomendations. |

OK!!! Things are much clearer now, I can see much further! LOL Thank you, Bobby, for clarifyng.
Recommandations? I don't think I have the expertist to actually recommand a brand or type but there is a little bit that I have learned about them. You're right that the double layer is the latest technology (unless something new has been developed over night, which is possible) however it will probably cost close to twice as much as a single layer burner and be aware that it's possible you will never use the double layer utility. The blank disc for it at present runs about $5! Depending on the data you want to burn the $5 may be worth it but you could burn at least 10 single layer DVDs for that amount of money.
As time goes on I'm sure the price of the discs will drop and become more reasonable so it doesn't hurt to be prepared with a burner that can use them.
Other than that the only thing I would mention is that it has the ability to use both the - and the + type blank discs. I'm pretty sure all the newer ones do.
I have a Memorex DVD player/burner - CD player/burner combination that is a double layer, uses both - and + blanks and it came with Nero 6 software. The Nero 6 is a bit stripped down but what is missing I most likely would never use anyway. I paid $99 at Best Buy, it was on sale and had two rebates, one for $30 and one for $10 so it was a good deal at $60. Other wise the full price would have been $129.
Have fun shopping!
