and it wasn't the fan system like I thought, I was close though, it was the m-board right next to where the fan plugs in. So I guess I'm looking for a new laptop. I can get a vista again and buy another copy of xp and lose my warrentee, or I can buy one with linux GOS v2 . I feel like crying. I guess I can try linux and get xp later if I can't live with it. Meanwhile I will keep looking for an xp for under 500.

Dave, are you really thinking of going with Linux? Have you had any experience with it? I haven't but understand it's a lot different from Windows and of course none of the Windows programs will work with it. However, they keep coming out with more and more application that run on Linux and there sure are a lot of Linux fans out there. Here is one list of programs written for Linux:

Can't you use the XP disk that came with the laptop to install XP on another PC. I think you would have to call Microsoft and tell them your laptop died and you will be allowed to put the OS on another laptop. Or desktop for that matter. They give you a different key. At any rate I would first give that a shot.

rb, I think I will buy a new mboard instead. I can get a new one for 159 plus tax and shipping from HP. I can buy refurbished on ebay but its risky and only save $100 or so and it would be used, so I think i will go with the new one at hp. I will look in ebay some more, they did have a new one for $150 but even though it was same model m200, it had one digit difference in the MB model number.
I just hope I can get it all back together, lol. |

Be sure the power supply is good, especially the plug. You wouldn't want it to burn out another Mobo.

I'm not sute where the power supply is rb, I think it is part of the fan. I will check that out on mb and see if I can follow the cord inlet, thanks for tip.
I am really worried about those ribbon cables, they litterally the size of ribbons. The last one I unplugged I did by feel because I couldn't see it and can only be plugged in.out on one end. Other than that one ribbon I think I will be ok. I hope, I hope |

Maybe you will be able to plug that ribbon into the mobo just before you set it into the case. Or have it partially set in. I have no idea what the contents of a laptop look like. One reason why I don't desire one too much, I'm afraid I would not be able to work on it if needed.

oh ya, I did see the power supply and looked ok. Just that one bad spot is all I see.
If you want to take a peek at what I am doing, I have the manual saved:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00442578.pdf
That ribbon cable, the last one, is less than 1/2 wide, and thin as paper. I can only raise the mb off the frame about 3 inches, so that will be very very hard to get in. The manual leaves that out and doesn't mention it. Nor does it say anything about plugging in the ribbon cables. I know a plastic part slides out a little, then I think I pust it in with the ribbom and it holds it some how.

Just looked through the manual.... wow. Give me a grown up PC anytime! I don't think I would ever work on a laptop.
