I'm installing xp and I imagine I will be needing some help, so I'll start a new thread. I think I screwed up already, I am formatting partition 3, and I wanted to replace vista. It shows 296243 mb free, so thats good, that means vista is only using about 20 gigs and vista it was telling me my hd was over half full and theres nothing on it.
My brother said he has both vista and xp on his pc, so maybe I'll leave it on a bit and see if its in the way. If it is in the way I will try to figure out how to format those partiitions (one is backup for vista I think).
I also noticed the cd says this oem version can only be distributed with a new pc. I hope I'm ok with that. |

That is primarily a notice for the distributor. Did they include a PC component of any kind with the CD? Even a packett of screws or something like that?
People build their own new PC and are then qualified to get an OEM version of Windows. So distributors technically can sell an OEM CD to someone that has build their own PC or made major hardware changes to their PCs. However distributors usually sell OEM versions of Windows to anyone and include some tiny PC component along with the CD to show that a hardware change was made by the buyer.
As for the actually install, other than a clean install on a formatted HDD, I can't give any advice on that. I had a dual boot and not sure I would want to go that way again but to each his own, lots of people have them. The problem is, in your case, the boot ini file (I think that's what it's called) will be on the Vista install. Getting rid of Vista later on can be tricky if even possible. If you just wipe that partition then your PC won't boot.
Not even sure you can install an older version on a PC that already has a newer version. I know you can't downgrade an install, don't know about adding a downgrade but I think that also applies.
For instance you can install XP on a HDD and later add Vista but I don't think you can do it the other way around.
If you want to keep Vista I would suggest you get a new HDD, install it and load XP on there. Then hook up your HDD with Vista as a slave and get all your files off there, transfer them to your new HDD and put the HDD with Vista away in a drawer.
Hopefully someone smarter than I about this stuff will give you more advice.

Thanks rb for reply. I will consider hetting a new hd, or maybe I can get the one I have sitting here with different connector type. It did replace vista, so vista is gone. I will see what happens when I get on line with windows as far as the oem. I think I should be ok considering the circumstances, it is for one new pc and not used on any other.
Well I made a couple discoveries so far, one is my widescreen is stretching the screen and there is nothing I can do about it. Chalk one up for vista.
The second thing is with vista I got on line automatically, and with xp I have to install it from cd, which I haven't done yet. |

Problem, can't get internet. I think I need a new network interface card for xp. I wonder if I could just borrow one from another xp sitting here. Its my sons, my grandsons pc someday so I hate to do that but maybe I should just to see if that fixes the problem.
I'm starting to think this was a mistake replacing vista with xp. |

Well you do still have the CD for Vista don't you?
You can try the card from the XP machine you have just to see if it works but there really shouldn't be a problem with getting online. Don't know much about XP but do you need to use the Wizard to plug in all your info before you can get a connection?
I've worked on people's PC that were set for dial up and I just put in a nic card, connect to my cable and it was good to go.
Is the PC a HP? Whatever brand it is, do they have a forum where you an ask questions?

I've tried everything rb. After failing to install it suggested i check connections, and if they are good then its my network interface card.
I took the one out of my sons pc and I added it next to the dialup modem card. Then I noticed the other card was in a different location. This should be ok shouldn't it? I'm afraid to start it up until I know. |

I don't think the location has anything to do with it. They all plug into the MOBO. Not sure what you mean though. Take out the network card that is in the PC now and insert the card from the old PC into the same slot.

The internet card you have may need drivers specifically for XP before it will work. If you give me the exact name and model I can help you look on the internet for the drivers. It will give that info on the card.
Or install free Belarc and it will give you the info

This wasn't any help, it sounds like I did everything right and he doesn't say anything about hooking up to internet.
7 ) Once Windows XP has been installed, connect the computer to the Internet, start the Internet Explorer browser, and visit http://update.microsoft.com
8 ) Install the sound, video, modem, and other drivers that are specific to your computer and your operating system ...
If I remember right, my other two xp's hooked up fine and without tyhe disc. |
