I bought a new 500 gig HD, backed up some video and now the pc freezes all the time. I defragmented but that didn't help. I thought my dvds burners were going bad but now roxio freezes up all the time and I am trying to install nero but it froze up. I haven't the faintest idea what could have happened or what to do. I could reformat, this is my video pc and won't lose too much I can't get back from tapes.

Any suggestions? This is my newer pc that had vista and I installed windows. It is about 4 years old now. I may have to buy a professional copier or buy a new pc I think, or give up and take it in and let someone else work on it. I don't see anything wrong, no burning smell, nothing. The ex HD did something to it.

I am using the external hd to back up video and it seems to work fine so far. Maybe the optical drives are fried. I have two new ones coming.

Doesn't really sound like your PC is fried.  Gee Dave, you seem to have several problems with that PC.  Or one problem that is causing a lot of trouble. I think you said elsewhere that you ran virus and malware scans?

There is definitely a conflict somewhere, hardware or software, do you have any idea what one thing might have started all this?  Either new hardware or software?

What happens if you unplug all unnecessary hardware, including the external HDD?  Does it still freeze???

I retried the ex HD and it works fine. I tried roxio again and it didn't crash. I tried other programs and all seems to be ok. I think my dvd burner both went bad and so if I put a disc in I have problems. I also checked out the movie program in roxio the other day,. which I don't use and never tried on that pc and maybe it caused problems by just opening it, its an older version of roxio. I would use nero if I hadn't had so many problems with it.

I may but that xerox dvd copier for $300, it would take pressure off my video pc. It has a HD so I can use it to back up files onto dvd also. Since I burn well over 1000 discs per year, I need it. If the new dvd burners have problems I'm ordering the copier.

I just got the two new burners, they are also samsung, but sata wiring. I tested to see if one plays a dvd and it does. I will test burning later. They are the exact same thing as I bought for other pc except sata. They are also the same as what I took out. If they work and I get one year I will be happy with that.

Well I finally braved copying a dvd and it was a success. Thats not saying much since the other day I was able to burn three before it froze up on me. But it looks like I won't have to send them back, if I have problems it must be my mb or something else.

My backup PC has a Memorex burner, which is about 5 or 6 years old and if I try to burn more than 3 or 4 CDs or DVDs in a row it will start producing failures.  I guess it's gets too hot.  I've gotten into the habit of only burning 3 or 4 disks in a row on any burner.  Course I don't burn nearly as many disks as you do.

You should be all set up now that you're getting the duplicator.  What with it and the two new burners you can turn out tons of copies.

Dave, the next time you a problem with your CD/DVD reader/burner you might want to try this site:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems

Personally I wouldn't hold out any great hope but you never can tell!

I usually burn a whole short stack, about 25 I think. It burns a 2 hour movie in just a few minutes. It could be the weather too, I have been having so much trouble with things electrical burning up or not working right this last three or four weeks. It is unusually hot and humid this year. It has rained everyday in june except for 5 days.
