NR You were the one to about the Hirens boot cd.
Have you used it?
I downloaded the Hirens_BootCD_v10.4.rar.
I unzipped it. The .iso showed up after the first unzip but it is zipped. When I unzipped that I got 4-5 files and a folder with a ton of files in it.
No where in any of that is a image.iso. I don't know how to burn a bootable cd from what is there.
I'm using winrar to unzip with.
I thought maybe since the iso file is named "Hirens.BootCD.10.4.iso" with no .rar extension that was the way it was suppose to be but a burned cd does not boot so now don't know what to do.
I have never burned an .iso so don't know how it is suppose to be done.
Any advice? |

You should be able to burn the iso file to CD or DVD. Your CD/DVD burner app should be able to figure out how to burn it as a bootable disc. I use Nero to burn mine but any decent burning software should be able to do the trick. You don't need to unzip the iso file...
What I would do is go into Explore, right-click on the iso file and choose Open with => Nero Burning ROM:
Nero would give me the option to burn to CD or DVD. I make my selection, make sure a blank disc is in my burner, then press the Burn button:

I did the right click and open with Nero and it worked.
I should have downloaded maybe an older version of the Hirens though cause much of the tools on the 10.4 is for Vista and Win7.
One of the partition programs found a second partition but 2 can't be found. I tried 3-4 of the partition programs on the CD.
I'll never understand why anytime I have to reload windows from cold boot it will not load back into the partition without deleting the partition repartitioning then formatting.
Just formatting won't work. And I tried for a long time to get into the recovery but that wants a floppy that I don't have and will not go to the CD.
Kind of makes one wonder why have other partitions if they are going to be lost when XP craps out.
At least I have this CD now to try to recover windows the next time this happens (and it will).
I can do a back up image on my 500gig external but don't know how to put the image back on the main drive without windows being loaded in the first place. |

You can download this if you want. It's version 9.4...
The best partition program on Hiren's Boot CD is Acronis Disk Director. To launch it, select 1 in the first menu, then 2 in the second. You should be able to see all the partitions on your HDD...
What is the brand of your PC? The HP and Compaq computers include a partition that you can use to restore your PC back to the way it came from the factory. You can launch the restore utility from the initial Post screen before Windows loads...
If you use Acronis TrueImage to create your image, you will need to create a Boot CD for it. TI includes the utility to create the boot CD. So if you ever need to restore an image, you would boot to your TI Boot CD, then restore your image once it finishes loading. It's pretty simple...

Ok I'll do that.
And will try the acronis. I did one starting with a P but not partition magic.
PM doesn't find lost partitions, I know cause I have a retail version.
I have a IBM clone. Self built. |

The only partitioning program that I've found that I like is the one from Acronis. It used to be named PartitionExpert, but they changed it to Disk Director Suite, which I can never remember. PartitionExpert made a lot more sense as a name...
What are you using to create your images???

Other than a point and shoot camera I've never created an image LOL
Burning that .iso the way you told me to the other day is the first time I ever got that to work.
Nero came with my CD rom and I can use it pretty well so I just stuck with that for burning.
There has been occasion I used anydvd but that has been awhile. |

Oh, I thought you said that you had created an image of your C drive and stored it on your 500 GB external HDD. If you don't have a copy of it, you might want to download TrueImage so that once you get the OS and all other installed programs working the way you want, you can create an image that you can use to restore should everything ever go south or if you ever want to upgrade your HDD to a larger one. When you restore the image, it will be exactly as it was when you created it. The image will overwrite everything on the partition that your restore it to...
After you install TI, you would use it to create a Boot CD that you can use to create your images as well as restore them if need be. Once you have the TI Boot CD created, you can uninstall TrueImage from Windows. You won't really ever need it again since you can do everything using the TI Boot CD on any PC you want...
