And here is a piece of software you can install

Take Ownership: Manage File Permissions in 7/Vista/XP

Do you find when you’re modifying system files in Windows 7, Vista, or XP that you have to change permissions a lot?

I’ve been using this for a while now and I can’t tell you how useful it is.

InstallTakeOwnership.reg adds a Take Ownership Context Menu Item to all files and folders.

This implies that this problem only pops up for system files.  The problem pops up for every file, system or not.  The problem pops up on files you created yourself.  The problem is everywhere in W7...

You gotta ask yourself why would W7 make you as the admin of the PC have to beg it to take ownership and get permissions to access anything?  Why would M$ think this is a good idea and why would it think people would happily jump through these unnecessary hoops???

dontknow

Here is something else:  cacls is a handy tool to change permissions of files en masse.

Resetting NTFS files security and permission in Windows 7 RC

To reset files permissions:

1. Run “cmd” as Administrator

2. Go to the drive or folder in question, for example:

   CD /D D:

3. To reset all the files permissions, type:

   icacls * /T /Q /C /RESET

4. And that’s it!

dontknow

After running this on my D drive, it ended by saying:
"Successfully processed 106 files;  Failed processing 17391 files"
This is my D drive where EVERY FILE ON IT IS MINE, yet it couldn't give me full ownership of all of my files...

XP is the last version that runs a lot of programs I like to use.

My son says I can run the programs in compatability mode but I have friends that cannot get the programs to run at all.  Just says this version cannot be run, won't install them.

I'm not throwing away $.$$ just cause MS says to.
