Microsoft sets Windows 7 pricing, upgrade programs
(CNET) -- Microsoft recently announced retail pricing for Windows 7 that was at or below comparable Windows Vista prices, while also offering a chance for people to preorder the software at a substantial discount.
From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99.
That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system.
Microsoft also confirmed, as expected, that a program offering Vista PC buyers a free copy of Windows 7 will kick off on Friday.
When boxed copies of Windows 7 go on sale on October 22, Microsoft plans to charge $119 for Home Premium, $199 for Professional and $219 for Ultimate.

Microsoft has said that it will have a program whereby Vista PC buyers will be able to get a free copy of Windows 7, but only if they purchase after a certain date. Well, that date would appear to be June 26.
....
a pre-order program that will run from June 26 through July 11, offering Windows 7 Home Premium upgrades for $49 and Windows 7 Professional upgrades for $99

Thats fine, I don't get the offer to upgrade. I don't think I want it anyway, I already bought xp to replace vista in one pc and don't want to relearn everything all over again in my vista laptop. |

Why not, Dave? If I understand correctly anyone can purchase the upgrade for that price. The upgrade will only work on Vista. That's the point of the whole thing, if you already have Vista you can upgrade for $49 or $99 depending on what version you have.
There is also something about XP, I think. You can get the upgrade also if you have XP but then there was something I didn't understand, they said on a XP machine you would have to clean install? I didn't know you could clean install with an upgrade?
Dave, if you have a spare hard drive you're not using you ought to download and install Win7 on there and try it out. You can download it for free and it will work until July of next year. See how it compares to Vista. You might like it a lot and since you already have and use Vista you wouldn't be as lost as I am! LOL I don't like Win7 because it's so different from XP which is what I have but from what I read Vista users say it's an improvement on Vista. I'm not familiar with Vista so I can't say.
Win7 sure is pretty!

| Well I don't have an extra HD on this laptop and don't want to mess with it, it does internet stuff ok. My other pc that had vista already has xp and the second HD is full of video. I will wait, I'm sure I'll get it sooner or later when I buy a new pc. |

OK, but I wasn't necessarily thinking of the laptop. Actually I was thinking of your desktop PC.
What I did was unplug the HDDs in my backup PC, hooked up a spare HDD and installed Win7 on it. I didn't even install the HDD in the case, just let it lay on a mousepad outside the case, LOL. Anyway I'm through playing around with it for now and the HDD with Win7 is in a box on the shelf.
Like I said since I'm not familiar with Vista at all I don't know how different Win7 is in comparison but I didn't seen to run across a lot of pop ups like you were describing when you first got Vista. I only installed a few programs, Gadwin of course, and configured one email account in Thunderbird.
Like I told Blake, I think I could get used to Win7 in time but I just don't want to. LOL

| well my other pc is still for dvd work, so xp works fine and I don't use it a lot anyway. I just burn copies of dvds and work on videos sometimes and thats about it. I have that thing about maxed out all the time. It crashes sometimes, so I need to keep it light as possible. I have way too much video on my hardrives. I don't think the dual amd processors are as good as my single p4, maybe thats why it crashes, but anyway, its full. I have to reboot before I even watch a dvd or it will crash before its over. |
