DANG! I just lost a long post. And my fingers don't like this keyboard AT ALL!

In device manager, can I throw out the two extra monitor entries? I think I can. In my theory, it won't LET me get rid of the one that's in use. Sound right to you? I'd like to fix this before I try my VeiwSonic.

(Did I tell you I'm a clean freak? You sure couldn't tell by my house, though.)

Update want's to give me Service Pack 1 for Microsoft .Net. I thought I heard we were getting rid of .Net altogether. ???

I know you're a risk taker and install stuff right and left. I'm still cleaning and shopping for that hdd. No AVG or SpyBot yet. I think I'm going to pass on ZoneAlarm.

Yes I do a lot of installing and uninstalling and messing around. Sometimes. BUT I also create an image of the C: partition frequently on a 2nd HDD plus an external HDD. And at least once a month I try to create an image of all the partitions on the main HDD to the external HDD. If not for that I too would be very careful. I still am, I would not call me reckless exactly.

Something that can be a life saver ( or completely worthless) is the Restore feature in XP. Like all of M$ it doesn't always work but when it does it can be a wonderful feature for getting out of trouble. Saved my bacon a couple of times.

As for the monitors you can probably uninstall all of them and reboot, the one that is attached should install when the machine reboots.

Update on .Net? I have M$.Net Framework 2.0 SP1 on this machine but I don't know why really. I think I've come across a program or two that I've installed in the past that required it. I uninstalled it from my backup PC trying to slim it down. I may uninstall it from this one and see if I really need it. Man!, it's 365MB in size!

Passing on Zone Alarm? Why? Are you using Windows XP firewall? You better have one or the other. Why no AVG or SpyBot? Do you have any virus scanner running?

Unless you have an application that you really want that requires .NET, I would avoid installing it. I have had bad experiences with it. If you do decide to install the Service Pack, make sure you have a good image of your C drive before you update, just in case...

You can delete the Monitor entries. If XP needs them, it will re-add them on the next boot...

Thanks, NR. I don't have the install CD or any CD for this machine. Got to tippy toe a little bit. I'll get that external hdd and copy what I've got before I do much more.

RB, I'm behind the NAT, hardware firewall built into my dsl modem. And XP's firewall.
