Pressure mounts for Microsoft to deliver with Windows 7

SEATTLE — One thing you don't see very often on corporate PCs and laptops: Windows Vista.

Nearly two years after introducing Vista, Microsoft (MSFT) is grappling with an unanticipated phenomenon: The latest version of its flagship Windows computer operating system remains a rarity in corporate settings. As a result, the software giant finds itself under acute pressure to stay on track with plans to replace Vista with the next version of Windows, code-named Windows 7, perhaps as soon as late 2009.

With the global economy stalling out — and with Apple Macs increasingly replacing Windows desktops and laptops in workplace settings — Microsoft can ill afford a repeat of the delays that beset the introduction of Vista. "They have to get Windows 7 right — and get it right the first time," says Laura DiDio, principal analyst at tech research firm ITIC

Rushing to get it out is likely to lead to mistakes and serious problems that will permanently damage the reputation of the next Windows OS. Once that reputation is lost, then it will be difficult to convince corporations to upgrade to the latest. If XP is working for most corporations, they aren't likely to take the risk of upgrading to Windows 7, especially after seeing what happened with Vista, unless M$ can introduce technology that most corporations can't live without, which isn't likely. And if past history repeats itself, M$ will attempt to punish corporations who skip Vista, charging them a fee for doing so, which will further alienate corporations and convince them to continue to stick with XP. M$ did that for customers who skipped XP when upgrading from W2K. I wonder if M$ learned any lessons from that mistake???

Well if their smart they'll back track to xp and try to improve that, but if they're not smart they will try to build on vista. Ms was in bed with hp and some software companies and their intention was to screw other companies that didn't pay to get in the loop, but the customers are the ones that suffered most and in turn ms shot itself in the foot. Serves em right, and hp and the others for causing so much grief for people while playing unfair.
