Someone gave me a Windows 3.1 computer, it's in great shape almost new. 
The monitor is a Packard Bell, the PC is a AST Advantage Pro 486XS/25. My friend used it for a business she had for a few years and paid $2400 for it when it was new. In 1992 I think.
I have no idea what to do with it. LOL It has three icons on the desk top. One is the screen saver which is going right now. The other is for a printer which I don't have. There is no Start button!!! How do you operate a computer without a Start button. No System Tray! How do you know what day and time it is without a System Tray?
I guess my door to the workings is the 3rd icon labeled Program Manager-(Accessories). Not much there right off the bat and Program Files opens a screen with strange file names. LOL
Would this thing upgrade to Win95? I have a disk.

You should be able to install W95 on that PC...

It has 4MB of memory, is that enough? Not sure of the HDD size yet but I thought I saw 900 someodd MB somewhere.

Your missing a digit or something, lol.
Rb, the hd and cd wires are probably worth something. I think most new pcs have sata and the older wires are getting harder to find. |

I'm missing more than a digit Dave. OH you mean in the HDD size! Hahahaha. Could be, that's what it says at the bottom of the screen in what I assume is the equivalent of Explorer.
I really hate to just junk it, it runs pretty good. It has a dialup modem installed but I don't have dialup access. I wonder if a nic card would install? Doesn't matter, I don't think there is much, in the way of new stuff, this PC can handle anyway.
Gonna try to find a good home for it.

W95 might be able to run on 4 MB of memory. Remember when W95 was released, it had to be able to run on most of the PCs out there that were running 3.1, so it probably will run on this one too. Whatever you do, you will still have a terribly outdated PC. A W95 PC will probably have a ton of vulnerabilities, so if it is exposed to the Internet, it may be easily hacked...

I think my best bet would be to try to find a good home for it rather than ruin it by experimenting. Surely there is someone out there that can put it some good use.

Good luck finding a good home for it. The PC is worthless even though it is in good condition. I bet if you signed up with freecycle.org, you could be given a lot of much newer and better PCs that you could give to someone else. I wouldn't give an old 3.1 PC to anyone unless I really didn't like them...

I wouldn't either, my aim is to find someone that really wants it. I just can't see myself putting it out by the garbage. I just won't do that.
