I have a friend that uses chat and after a few minutes they can no longer revieve messages, but they can send out messages ok. They have dialup. They delete all temp files, cookies and history, they contacted the phone co and they are running tests on connection but all seems fine otherwise. They are not saving messages in archives. They uninstalled and reinstalled. We can't figure it out, anyone have any ideas?

Do they both have the same version? Here is a reply to just that type question:

I can send Instant Messages, but not receive them
If you are using the chat2.0 software, the Instant Messages do not work as expected. Only if both you and the recipient are using Chat2.0 will you receive each others replies. If the recipient is using another form of chat, you will not be able to receive any replues.

Other than that I have no idea. I do know live chat is next to impossible on dial up but typed messages usually work OK on Yahoo or other Instant Messengers.

Maybe update Java?

I'd like to ad an avatar-but i don't really understand how to. I also keep trying to write in color, but that doesn't happen either. I'd like to post a picture of my dog Henry-but I don't know how.

If any one is kind enough to answer these questions, don't use big words, I confuse easy! (Just ask Dave)

Welcome to RCF, purplehugs!!! LOL, I just saw you at Dave's forum. So glad you made it over here.

Yeah, posting on forums can be very confusing, they are all a little different. And this one especially is loaded with features up to one's ears! Thanks to our expert tech and programmer, Nightrider.

To post a picture you first have to uploaded to the net somewhere, most of use ImageShack. If you look right below the posting window you will see a Browse button and next to it a button labeled ImageShack Upload.

Click the Browse button to find your picture on your HDD, double click the picture. The path will appear in that slot to the left of the Browse button.

Then click the ImageShack Upload button and you will be taken to the ImageShack site. Sometimes you have to be patient with ImageShack, can take a while for it to show up, other times it pops right up.

At ImageShack you will see a small version of your picture and URL above and below the picture. The ones above are thumbnails and the ones below are full size. I usually pick the first one. Copy it and paste it into the message box over here.

If I confused you ask for clarification. With a little practice you will be an expert in no time.

To write in color: Highlight the text you want colored then go to the top of the message box and click the little arrow next to the Default button. You will get a menu listing colors, click the one you want.

To add an Avatar: At the bottom of your Profile page you will find three ways to add an Avatar, probably the easiest way would be to find it on your HDD (the first choice) or uploaded it to ImageShack and then paste in the URL (the second choice). I don't think our Avatar Gallery is working

Update, By opening a new desktop-I was able re-install yahoo messenger w/o losing the connection every 10 minutes!
