msn update knocked zone alarm firewall out. I waited a few minutes for windows update when I booted up this morning, then had to reboot, then no internet. I couldn't figure it out, turn bb modem off twice, and an hour later I still can't figure ot out so started up another pc and internet is fine, so I am back here trying things and I turn off my firewall and I get internet back. So I can't run without firewall so I had to use windows firewall, no choice, they are forcing me to use their firewall. Now I have the same fcxxg update waiting on both other pcs.
Any ideas rb? Or I just screwed and stuck with windows firewall now? |

Good research Dave!!! Unfortunately I can't uses Zone Alarm on my new build. It's a x64 system running XP Pro 64-bit and Zone Alarm won't work with i64-bit. I was really disappointed about that.
Right now I'm using Ashampoo Firewall. I tried Commando and it just about ran me up the wall with it's popup warnings. Didn't seem to be a way for it to remember my answers.
And now I'm having a problem with AVG 8 updating. None of the suggestions on the net work for me. There are a LOT of people having the same problem with AVG 8. I think I'm going back to version7, they still support it and offer updates.

I replaced AVG with Avast and I think I like it OK. Hehehe, it even talks to me! It monitors mail just like AVG did and updates automatically. I've been hearing good things about it and often see it mentioned in same breath as AVG. Only thing is it puts two icons in the system tray and I have enough there already. LOL
OH hey, guess what you find when you really look! I can actually merge the one icon with the main one! Isn't that neat?

ZoneAlarm Issues Fix For Problems Caused By Microsoft DNS Patch
Users of Check Point Software's ZoneAlarm personal firewall products can now download a fix that resolves an Internet connectivity glitch created by a Microsoft security patch released earlier this week.
The fix applies to the ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, Pro, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Basic Firewall editions of the product. It can be downloaded directly from Check Point's ZoneAlarm.com Web site.
The problem began on Tuesday when Microsoft sent patch number KB951748 to Windows users. The patch is designed to plug a security vulnerability that leaves computers vulnerable to so-called DNS attacks.
The vulnerability is widespread and affects products made by numerous networking and software vendors beyond Microsoft. It was discovered by Dan Kaminsky, of the Seattle-based security firm IOActive, Inc.
Through a DNS attack, a hacker can redirect Internet users' page requests to phishing sites or other malicious pages. Various reports suggest that ZoneAlarm interpreted the Microsoft patch itself as malicious code, and automatically severed users' Internet connections in response.
News of the trouble spread quickly on Internet forums.
"For those of you using ZoneAlarm who installed the Windows updates today, you probably already know that your Internet connection has died," wrote user "Winchester73", in a post Tuesday on the popular broadband forum DSLreports.com.
Numerous other forum users reported experiencing the same problem. Dozens of posters on ZoneAlarm's own forum reported Internet outages. "I service and administer approximately 200 privately owned computers and I have received about 20+ telephone calls from users with this problem today," wrote "Calken".
To download the ZoneAlarm patch, users may first have to uninstall the Microsoft patch in order to restore their Internet connections. CheckPoint said lowering ZoneAlarm's security settings to "medium" might also restore connections even if the Microsoft patch is still present.

lol, nr, you copied the whole article, but that website you linked to copied the whole article as well. The usage of others material is ramped. People do it so much it is the norm. I guess the only way to understand why or if it is wrong is to build a website and place ads on it to make food money, then find your hard work on another site with ads and see how you feel. Which is what I do with my pictures, art, cartoons and stuff and I know how angry I get when people copy a whole page and paste on their website or forum with ads on it.
Sorry nr, its just on my mind lately as I mentioned a little in that squido thread. I really don't care but someone somewhere has to let people know that even though it is common practice, it is a no no to copy whole articles, or enough info that people don't need to go to original website. The guy who originally wrote this is losing a lot of traffic because other sites borrowed his whole article. I bet you really hate me now nr...? But there is ads at bottom of this page.
Anyway back to topic, that sounds like a real pain, have to uninstall the patch, then try to find the link by way of detours to other websites. I tried to use medium security but that didn't work. I guess I will give up on zone alarm. |

Yep, that second link says it all. Just like you did.
Thanks for the heads up, Dave.
