Dell's XP 'downgrade' plan--an extra 50 bucks, please

f you missed that June 18 deadline to order your Dell laptop or desktop with Windows XP, you're not totally out of luck. We're actually totally acclimated to Windows Vista by now, but if you're not ready to make the leap yet, we finally have some details on the XP downgrade plans being offered by Dell.

Even though Dell can't sell you a computer with just an OEM copy of XP anymore, they'll be more than happy to sell you a Vista PC, but install a copy of XP on it instead. Then they toss the copy of Vista you've already paid for into the box, so you can install it when you're ready to take the big plunge. This'll add between $50 and $100 to your purchase price, depending on which version of noninstalled Vista you get.

Be carefull though because windows xp won't look too good on a widescreen or newer laptop like mine, it has a wider screen. My widescreen looks terrible in xp, everything is egg shape instead of circular. All text is stretched so bad its hard to read. Xp also has a few problems that vista doesn't have, like recognizing and installing some newer softwares, modems, camcorders etc.

Having said that, vista gives me an ulcer real quick when I have trouble of any kind, it is not user friendly at all as far as configuring, installing older software and older hardware. It also hogs up space so videos producing is severely limited. Also be prepared for crashes, lost data, reformatting often and other terrible things, it is just not a work horse like xp.

Dave, that just isn't right!  I have a wide screen 22" ViewSonic monitor and running XP, everything looks fine, it did even with default drivers that Windows provided.  After installing the ViewSonic drivers there was maybe an improvement in color but no major change.

There is something wrong with you resolution settings or graphic card drivers.  The native setting for my monitor is 1680 x 1050 however everything is too small at that setting and when I tried various others I got pretty much what you did, a lot of distortion. I call the ViewSonic people, 800 number provided in the documentation, and the nice lady helped me find an alternative, 1280 x 1024.  You can't just pick any resolutions for a wide screen LCD like you can for a CRT.

Here is a sample of what I see, does that look normal to you?  Dave If wide screen LCD screens distored stuff on different type of operating systems they wouldn't be selling very many of them
