Partition Table Doctor
This might be worth looking into. I was thinking a person better install this on a partition other than C: because if C: becomes unavailable what good would it do. Then I read this from a poster:
This software can make it’s own boot-up disk though - This is what I will be using it for. Should you need it, you can simply boot from the disk and be able to sort a wide range of disk problems quite simply.
Further down it tells you exactly how to do that. Although I have Acronis True Image and Partition Expert I may download this program and make a boot CD just in case.
