However, a lot of it could be your attitude, Dave.  Instead of fighting Vista every inch of the way maybe you should try making friends with it.  Really, I'm not kidding.  You do have your old PC up and running so you an get your work done, take your time with Vista and see if you can better understand it.  You may discover that it works better than you think.

No the problem is NOT wqith Dave's attitude!  It is with the construction of the new Vista OS in general.  It was hailed as the best of MS' Operating Systems yet but has never come close to fulfilling that prediction.   This has been reported by users at all levels of proficiency.  The intended aim of Vista was to create a large market for new software and hardware which is required by switching to Vista.

As you said, we were not allowed much choice as to whether we wanted to switch or not.  Not as we were in the past when new OS came out.  The reason was to closely control EVERYBODY to enter into the new purchasing market.  Because of much indignation by consumers, there was a revert-back-to-XP solution offered but not before much resistance by MS.  Theses solutions were not offered by MS but by the PC companies.  Dell was the first to offer this g0-back solution.

To show you what a prime example of a screwed up OS Vista was, I purchased a PC with Vista Home installed (Because that was all that was available to me) and discover\ed that it (Vista) had to be activated before it could be used.  The instructions seemed simple.  It said enter the product code that was on a sticker on the side of the case into a certain blank.  Simple huh?  NOT!  When I did as instructed I was told that my product code was not a valid number!  After two days of constant phone  conversations and punch 1 for this and punch 2 for that blah, blah blah I finally was given a telephone number to call a special help group that had been set up just to handle this screw-up by MS.

This is just one example of what a total mess that was created by MS.  And no Dave, it IS NOT any fault of your attitude.  If someone disagreeswith my assessment of Vista just jump into it and report what a wonderful improvement it is over XP or other OSs.

P.S.    To show that MS realizes what a mess they created, they offer several workarounds that will make Vista operate and/or appear similar to Win XP.  If Vista was so much of an improvement why would you want to go back to that?

rb, I did some research today, it isn't hard to see that just about everyone is complaining about vista, except those who don't know anything about it or haven't used it yet, or they work for ms. Do a google on conflicting software with vista. Try anti virous conflicts with vista. I would say that you have an awakening coming your way girl.

Anyway, today went better, thats because I didn't do anymore checking things out on new pc, I just researched what others were saying and some people make me look like I have a good attitude. Vista is really screwing a lot of people and software companies.

Also, on a lighter note, I decided to stay off the internet for now with new pc since it conflicts with the norton that comes with the pc and my version also. It is ready but I just may use it strickly for video.

I copied dvds with my roxio just fine.

I tried my adobe premeire and I had to do the "get code first' bit like bobby was talking about. I had to do it in combo with old pc since I'm not online and it took an hour of prime time (babysitting today, I only get 2 hours for lunch) but using my memory stick saved me (because typing in exact codes is very hard) and it went fine. Matter of fact, this new pc is much faster using video programs. Now you see I have a good attitude.  Shocked

Not as far as Vista goes ....  I have no intention of touching it with a 10 goot pole!  EVER.  LOL   I too have read what others have to say.  But I could hardly say anything AFTER you had already ordered the new PC.  I didn't want to color your view of it.  Some people actually like it.  I don't know ... maybe those are the crazy ones.  LOL

I'm glad you are finding some good things about it.  And using it only for your video and graphic work is not a bad idea in fact.  Sounds like an excellent idea to me.

I want to explain a little more on my attack on norton and ms with their popups. A couple months ago I got this trogan. It wasn't the type of thing that shut you down, it was just annoying. In the bottom right corner it was blinking, and small popups would come up constantly saying I had a problem and it can be fixed here or something like that. No matter what you do, it won't go away. It is a well known trojan. When you search on the internet for a fix, there is a lot of places that will take your money but it can't be fixed. It is a scam. The outfit that runs the program doesn't exist. The people behind it are the coutfits that offer to fix it. I reasearched it all and this is what I found out. It was so annoying, I decided to reformat my laptop to get rid of it.

Now, I am very sensitive to annoying popups telling me something is wrong and needs fixed for security reasons. Well guess what I see with vista? The same type popups. I have to shut down three popups to get rid of it and still, a yellow norton popup still comes up, so I really can't get rid of it. Sound familar? That is why I say these are the same tactics as the trojan scam. Its like organized crime, no, not like, it IS organized crime. Now, whos popups come up, whoever benefits are the sources, who would be norton and ms.

There is more. I was forced to have windows with yahoo on my desktop. I had to configure three times, three different places to fianlly close the popup. That took some doing. I wasted a lot of time just getting rid of that.

I saw inside a checked box saying it was ok for outside people to enter my computer. How dumb is that?

Today I shut down and instead it rebooted. I used to get three options, shut down, switch user and log off. Now I get a small popup with a long list menu with small print. Thats how it goes. It is unfriendly everyway you turn. You have to stop, read everything, then choose what to do and all this on simple tasks like moving a folder. Then when you decide and click the right choice, it chokes and stalls and maybe it will work, maybe you made the wrong choice and now you have to make several more steps to fix the error.

Its not only vista, adobe did something simular with elements 5. It has the exact same options, only they moved everything around so you have to look all over the place to find it, it fights you the whole way. I checked and people in the know claim it is user unfriendly, nothing like elements 2. That is why I blame young people because these aren't the same people who made the original, they had common sense and the new softwares lose all sense, so I figure they are young and don't know what they're doing yet they want to change the world. Idiots. People should be fired over all this stupidity.

On the otherhand, premiere elements is more user friendly, but only the base program, once you are finished making the short clips, don't waste another minute with adobe dvd program, it just doesn't work at all. They are faking it. Use roxio or other. Whos ever in charge of that part of it should be fired. They claim they don't have bottle neecks like other software, but thats exactly what their problem is and it just does not work.

Dave, have you considered changeing back to Win XP?  I have read somewhere that if you had XP Pro before, you can convert Vista back to XP Pro.  I'm not suire of the details but it can be done under certain circumstances.  That might be the best way to go to get away from Vista.

More information on dual-booting.

1) Dual Boot Situation

colinlam asked - Hi, I have three partitions, XP Pro on the
first, Vista on the second and my data on the third. The problem
I am having is accessing the data from either OP. If I change
ownership in one and then the other I cannot open files from the
first and have to take ownership again. I have had this system
running OK for months but have had to reinstall when the
motherboard blew and cannot get it running for the life of me.

    Ron M. answered:
For dual boot situations involving XP and Vista I always
recommend that a third party Boot Manager program such as BootIt
Next Generation (www.bootitng.com) be used and that it be
configured so that the non-booting operating system partitions
    are hidden.

This is generally a good idea with all Windows multi-boot
situations but it is especially important with Windows XP and
Vista as Windows XP will destroy the System Restore information
on the Windows Vista partition if it is allowed to access it.

I thought about it bobby, but I don't quit easially. I may do that later on if I can't live with it. Its just rude having their way forced on you, unfriendly.

What I said last nite about trogans etc., I just happened to get a virous in the mail this morning. I didn't open it but I'm sure thats what it is. I mention I am suspicious about MS & norton's roll in trojans, worms & virouses, shortley after I get a virous in my mail.

never mind that about norton. My search for possible virous takes me to other places. I posted a vid on my board showing a alkida firing grenades and one goes off prematurely. I am being very assuming, but things around the house here have us all stressed out and need to vent somehow.

Heres some of what I'm finding:
