Apple on Monday released updates to its QuickTime media player software to repair eight serious security vulnerabilities.

The vulnerabilities expose both Macs and Windows PCs to cyberattack, Apple said in a security alert. In all cases, an attacker could craft a malicious file which, when opened with QuickTime, could give the miscreant full control over a computer running the software, Apple said.

The problems lie in the way QuickTime handles a number of formats. The security updates repair problems in the way the software handles QuickTime, MIDI, 3GP, PICT and QTIF files, according to the Apple alert.

The fixed version of QuickTime is release 7.1.5. Along with the fixes, the latest version also includes some functionality improvements, Apple said. The update is available for download from Apple's Web site or through the Apple update feature, the company said.

I'm still mad a qt for taking over my media files and prohibiting other programs from functioning. It works ok on laptop, and it worked in the past on main pc, but after getting newest version it pretty much shut me down so I had to uninstall. I did try them again and same problems. They need to adrress that too, but I don't think I will ever trust them again. Taking over peoples computers is a bit much. Things like that could put them out of business. They are untrustworthy in my oppinion. Now I hear this insecurity, thats just icing on the cake.

I had no trouble updating to 7.1.5.  When I clicked on Update Existing Software, it opened a web page in Opera with 2 download options; one for the free 7.1.5 version and the other for the Pro version, 7.1.30...

During the install, it asks whether you want to associate other media types with Quicktime, of which I recommend saying No...

Yes, I just got the update too.

Fishead, during install you get a option to configure File Types and MIME Types, I unchecked everything but the really weird ones and those specifically for Quick Time.  Not sure what the SDP thing is, may uncheck that after all.

Rb, we had this talk before I think, I turned them all off except for quicktime movies/videos. One of the problems is when I install it, i can no longer open images with ie. It takes over my image files and I don't like that. I turned everything off like you said but it still takes over. Then when I check running programs it turns itself back on everytime, connects to their website and transfers data. I installed and uninstalled it three times, I gave it it chances. I don't have any trouble with my laptop, thats because I don't work with video and graphics on here. I used to like qt, now I hate it, just reread this thread if you think its not trouble. I just wanted to say, look  Shocked  at this thread!

I believe you, fishead.  I just don't know why it gave you so much trouble.  But I have found out long ago not all programs behave the same way on all PCs.

I don't blame you for not wanting it on your machine.

This week I tried to open one of my cds with images, I have severla that just don't work. Then it occured to me, you know, I think I used to be able to open this cd...., so I took it to my laptop and it opened. Go figure. Ok, my old pc was on its last leg with cd burner, and so maybe .... i don't know, but now I will have to go through all my cds to find others I set aside that didn't open.

I could go on and on an weird things like this, I think pcs are like a cocktail, they are made up of a mixture of things. My son recently bought a new pc and even though it was a HP, it didn't come with much of anything, this is good, no windows to conflict with other, and he is able to use my abdobe premiere to capture video, and I can't, and that sort of thing. I thought he got ripped off, paid too much and didn't come with much of anything but after hearing about all his good luck, I wish I had his pc instead of my fully loaded pc.

QT could be conflicting with windows, or roxio, or adobe, or who knows but it either takes over media or nothing. So its nothing, I can live without them.

Just ran across a problem with Jet Audio yesterday!   Crying or Very sad   It insists on playing what should be a WMP file from email. And yet it can't display it.  Nothing I do or change makes a difference, either in WMP or Jet Audio or Netscape.  If I save the file to my desk top and click it then WMP will open and play it just fine.  Go figure.

I'm sure there are ways to fix all these little quirks but finding those ways may take so much time and effort it's not worth it.  Unless it's something that is really important, then I will spend days solving it!
