If you open the Recycle Bin and right-click an item and click delete in the menu that appears, is it completely deleted from your PC?  Also, can the items shown in the SS be deleted safely?  And.....what is the bak extension?  What type of file is this with the .bak extension?

When you delete anything in your Recycle Bin, all Windows does is disconnect all linkages to the file.  So even though it still exists on your HDD, there is no way to access it...

There are programs that can retrieve deleted files.  But the longer you wait to retrieve them, the more likely it is that Windows will overwrite them with other data.  So if you ever accidentally delete an extremely important file and want to recover it, it is best to stop using the PC until you can use the Recovery software to retrieve it for you...

You can use programs like PartitionExpert to format the HDD and remove all data from them.  But no matter what, there is always a chance that someone can recover data from a used HDD.  The format programs are supposed to overwrite the data with all zeros and many can be set to do that formatting several times to assure that all data is wiped from the HDD.  But still most government agencies will destroy HDDs even after they have been wiped clean just to guarantee that no one could find a way to retrieve data from them.  Your former governor did that to all HDDs that they used...

The bak extension stands for backup.  Many programs will rename critical files to bak whenever they are uploading newer versions of those files.  So if all is working correctly after installing programs like that, the renamed bak files can be safely deleted...

If you click on "Empty the Recycle Bin" in the Recycle Bib box will this also just disconnect the links to the files that you "empty" or will they be removed from your PC.  For some unknown reason 306 items and files have been added to my Recycle Bin since yesterday.  RB and I worked on a problem with my SendTo menu sending my e-mails to Thunderbird by mistake and we finally just uninstalled Thunderbird to stop it.   I assume something that we did yesterday caused all of the files and other items (Like pictures and documenta) to go to the Recycle Bin.  These apparently are just backups of the same items that are still on my PC where they are supposed to be.  There is a "Restore all items" in the Recycle Bin Tasks box Just below thr "Empty the Recycle Bin" option.  I guess that if I delete all items in my Recycle Bin and something goes wrong I can restore them.

If you empty the Recycle Bin, there is no way to retrieve the documents unless you have special software that can do that.  So even though the data will remain on your HDD until it is overwritten, it will be totally unaccessable to you, meaning it is literally deleted...

I'm not sure what this means.  What is trash?  Do you have any idea where all of those items (306) came from  in the Recycle Bin since yesterday morning?  Did uninstalling Thunderbird have anything to do with it?

You deleted some .bak files that were in your Sent to folder.

Anything with an extension of .bak or .old or .temp can be deleted.  And no, not being familar with your PC, I don't know where all the files came from.

So to delete anything with a .bak, .old or .temp I just rightclick on each and click detete?  NR said that this wouldn't delete them but would just remove the link to them.  Is there not a way to completely remove them from my HDD?

All files leave traces behind even if they are deleted. They stop taking up space at the computer and they stop existing to YOU. Unless you are in touch with CSI or similar authorities OR have access to a software like they have, there is no way you can get those files back.
Also when the magnet disc inside the HDD is being pulled out in order to save information from a damaged disc, the do that in very tightly closed rooms in overalls that make the empoyees look like robots in order for them to be dust free. I think they have some little boxes actually that are emptied on air just to guarantee that the magnet disc will remain intact. If you have access to this kind of instruments then yes, you will be able to recover what's been deleted from your recycle bin.
