Some time today it just appeared in my SystemTray. If I right click on it I get the options shown in the SS below. I don't have Java listed in my programs list. Does Java work in the background and does not need to be accessed? Should I click on "Hide Icon" in the menu? Does it need to stay in the SystemTray and if not how do I get rid of it?

Another program you may have recently updated or it did so automatically. I think it places an icon in the System Tray be default when you use Java. The Jigzone puzzles for instance use jave and when I begin play the icon appears. If you don't want it there you can choose Hide Icon.
And yes it works in the background, it's not something you launch manually.
