LOL, for the past two days I have had my nose to the grin stone, and still do, fixing a PC.  I could write a book on what I've done so far but won't bore anyone with all that.  But do want to say I learned something new!

The PC is a Compaq Presario  That should give you a hint!  LOL  It was running W98SE.  It was very messed up from abuse by it's owner and a nephew of the owner.  I say owner because he admitted to having a hand in creating the mess.

After hours of work I determined there was no hope for it.  Course he doesn't have a disc restore...   Crying or Very sad

Well soooo, I'll just install W2K on it, right?  Not so fast.  PC wouldn't boot up with the W2K install disc.  Nothing.  Checked the BIOS, would you believe there were only two opinions to boot from, floppy and HDD!?

PANIC!!!   Cussing Compaq, sending out SOS to NR, reaching for that 4 pound hammer in my tool box ....  The knight in shinning armour arrives and says to boot to W98, put the W2K disc in the tray and wait.

WOW, here comes Windows saying the OS on the disc is newer than the one installed and do I want to upgrade to Winodow 2000???  DO I???   Is the Pope Catholic???

And the rest is history.  Course now I'm having to dig up new drivers for everything on the net.  Just got the modem installed, after jumping through more hoops than I want to ever do again.  This PC is at least 6 years old so finding drivers to use with W2K is more than a little challenge.

So far everything is working and looking perfect, W2K upgrade left all of the owners files and programs intact, hotdog that was neat the way it worked!

All I can say is that Old Pete owes me big time!!  At least TWO brand new rolls of Life Savers!  None of this half a roll stuff either, I want whole rolls!

WTG RB.  This means "Way to go" RB.  You de man. (This means you have exerted your vast experience in a craftsman-like attitude and have come up with success).  You did good.   (which means.........well you know what that means).  I couldn't have done better myself!  And I really couldn't have!

Ya Done Good George  Dancing   HeeHee I have fought with many messed up computers sometimes hours sometimes days, it feels good to get the things fixed and not losing the data is really cool.

I put XP Pro on our computers and it's been nothing but a pain since.  Only thing I like about it is the pictures are easier to go through.
I wanted to go Linux but we have hundreds of dollars of games windows only.
We cannot keep the network connected and 98se never lost it.  Hubby is hinting he wants 98 back and I probably will give it to him cause I'm so tired of XP not liking anything. and I refuse to buy another scanner.

You may know this, KeeKee, and have done it already but in case you haven', try updating all the drivers.  Hardware that worked fine with W98 probably won't work as well or at all, using the same drivers with XP.  That's quiet a jump in operating systems.

Scanners especially can be a real pain. Have you gone to the Scanner's web site to see if they have drivers especailly for XP?  Sometimes you can just type in the model number of the scanner into Google along with the word drivers and it will bring up several sites to look at.

I have  a visioneer scanner.  I have seen something about fuji in looking for drivers in regards to this particular scanner.  This is the original paperport.  It was one of the first that came out with the buttons on the scanner itself.  The thing does up to 2400 dpi I''ve never needed that.

I do have a life script to Drivers.com but it is on hubbys computer right now.  I updated all his drivers thru there.  One day I will get it off his and put it on mine and hook up the scanner go there let it search and see if it is found.  But it just really ticks me off that MS goes only so far back on hardware.  I think it has something to do with pay the money.

I did go to vissioneer but on their site when I go to drivers the page goes all screwy and you see nothing but errors.  I havn't emailed them, guess I should.

We may have the same scanner!  I have Visioneer One Touch 7800, and yes it can really be a PITA when installing.  And if you unplug it for any reason and then replug it you may end up having to install the drivers again, but not always. AND another thing, you need to leave it unplugged when you install the drivers and only plug it back in when they tell you to as they lead you through the install process step by step.

I will say one thing though I've had this scanner for years and it just keeps on ticking, it runs all the time the PC runs. That's another thing, lots of times in order to work it needs to start with the PC at boot up, if you turn it on after the PC boots it may not work.  Picky, picky, picky.   LOL

Check out this page:

http://www.visioneer-europe.com/support/winxp.htm

Check the links on the right, they have manuals to download in case you no longer have yours.  If this page gives you a problem try opening it with another browser.  For me it works perfect in Netscape, Firefox and IE.
