You may want to look into this little service. I installed it and it made a big difference! My W2K now shuts down anywhere from 8-10 seconds to 18-20 seconds. Used to take almost 3 minutes.
Why Windows takes so long to shut down.
We all have been there. It is 4:55 and you want to get out of work...But you want to make sure your system is shutdown for the night. You dutifully close all of your applications and start shutting down
5 minutes later it *finally* powers off
It happens to more machines that it should. I decided to see what the problem might be. I searched google, forums, and newsgroups for an answer. The biggest culprit is a problem unloading the current users profile.

since my new HD, it shuts down instantly, might take 20-30 seconds. It still boots up very fast, 20 seconds and I'm ready to go.
I am seeing a litle lagging, not much, but some, so I'm looking into it - I notice that quicktime checks its own box in the running programs, I see in codestuff. It may be the reason.
Speaking of quicktime, I still cannot open any image in explorer still, it ruin this option permanently. Now as of late I am having problems getting image files on pc from CD, quicktime did something I think, and I had one cd yesterday that wouldn't unload into my pc, well I ran out of patients and gave up, it just kept loading and loading getting no where.
I also notice I cannot save any movie opened by quicktime, they want money they say I have to buy the paid version. People should be looking into QT, they play dirty and need to be held responsible for corrupting files and for not working with windows. MSN should know about this but they are so gunshy from lawsuits that they won't stand up for themselves. QT sucks bigtime if you ask me. |

Fishead is using CodeStuff Starter. That won't help with the images, don't know what happened there. However, I don't understand why Quick Time keeps checking it's square to start up. Mine doesn't do that. There must be some setting in QuickTime preferences that allows that.

Fishead, do you have Check for updates automatically unchecked? If it is checked that could be what's putting the check mark into the square.

Rb, it was checked. I unchecked it, so we will see if that helps.
I went into codestuff and saw two QT icons, one was checked. Thats what it does, I uncheck and come back and it adds another checked icon. I think you found the fix. Thanks again rb. |

| Hey Fishead. Be sure and uncheck BOTH QT boxes. From time to time one of my boxes will get unchecked and I will get a QT icon in my SystemTray. I'm not sure why it unchecks one of the boxes but it will. It probably is done when you use QT or some related program so go back and check CodeStuff Starter periodically. |

Fishead, have you made any progress with your image not opening in IE problem? If not have you tried a full scan of all the files with the System File Checker tool? It should repair or replace and corrupted or missing files. Instructions .... and do this when you have the time it could take an hour or more for the scan to complete
Using the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.
Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media.
Notice there is a space between sfc and /scannow
