Yes, Netscape has it's problems but nothing very serious, the biggest problem is AOL purchased it. I have always used Netscape from the day I went online and am used to it, hard to change old habits.  SeaMonkey is almost just like Netscape and I have only it on a couple of PCs, I love it.  Soon as they come out with the newest version I think I'm going to install it on my main PC and cut Netscape loose.  LOL  When you install SeaMonkey (actually written by the same people that wrote Netscape) it intergrates all your settings from Netscape, the Bookmarks, mail, everything.  It's really great.

Dave, you can do a search in Windows Explorer for Netscape and it will find all the left over files and folders, you can delete them from there.

Programs like QuckTime, Roxio and Nero shouldn't increase your boot time unless you have them load on bootup.  There is no need for them to load on bootup, you can launch them when you need them. Do you know what all actually loads when you bootup?  There is a little free program called CodeStuff Starter that shows you most of what loads when you start Windows and you can uncheck what isn't needed.  Read what's there carefully and be sure of what you uncheck.  However, if you uncheck the wrong thing you can always go back and check it again.  They have a nice ScreenShot of the program on the site.

This is part of what mine looks like:

Well rb I may be wrong but I have seen it everytime I installed them, nero and roxio both seat themselves thoughout my whole computer slowing things down considerable.

Even now, after I loaded a ton of videos on here yesterday, it didn't slow my reboot at all. Thats why I was doing all the screaming last year about all these softwares trying to manage my media files, they slow my reboot time down considerably.

Yesterday after seeing quicktime came back after updating drivers, I decided to re-install the free package quicktime. I will see what happens in the long run. Meanwhile, I just won;t be able to open anything with Int. Explorer. I have a feeling if I buy the quicktime full package my problems would go away, how convunient for QT.

HOLY COW!  Now wonder you have a slow boot!!!

I can't tell you for sure about all that's listed, some you may have to determine just exactly what they are and what they do by Googling them  But for sure uncheck everything Adobe, Play Center, CamMonitor

Not really sure what DDCActiveMenu is but I do know WildTangent is evil!! You might Google that and see what it is and what it does, I don't like the looks of it

I think you can uncheck all the Nv stuff including nwiz, they all have to do with your Video card (looking for updates and stuff) don't need to load on bootup.

Uncheck QuickTime, RegistryMechanic, Reminder, Share-to-Web, StorageGuard, all Adobes, HP Digital Imaging, InterVideo WinCinema Manager, Microsoft Find Fast, Office Startup and  ... what ANOTHER Adobe!   No wonder you have problems with your images being over managed you have all these programs managing them.

Dave, that's all I can see right off hand, I would have to Google some of the other stuff to be sure.  I'm not sure all the HP stuff need to load on boot up either but not sure.

To echo RB, yes, definitely uncheck most of those programs.

From what I can see, you have two basic problems. One is too many programs all trying to manage your images. Pick one manager, and uncheck or uninstall the others. Every graphics program around seems to come with its own image manager. Pick the one you like best, and don't even install the others whenever you upgrade or reinstall your graphics programs.

The second problem is MS Find Fast, its indexing service. This is one hog! It's working in the background, indexing every single file you create or modify. It's a resource hog, a memory hog. And I dislike it intensely. My advice is to disable it permanently. Uncheck it in that list if you want, but it's probably safer to go into Control Panel and disable it completely, or go into your admin tools and look in Services and disable it there.

MS claims that Find Fast will help you find files faster, but I doubt that it does. Maybe it'll find text files faster, since it indexes everything within every text file, but it won't find image files faster. It's a total waste, IMO.

Yes, bigR, you are absolutely right Fast Find should be disabled permanently

Found this info for you, Dave:

Findfast, originally added to NT as part of Microsoft Office, is now the Indexing Service. It is enabled by default for Windows 2000 and XP as part of the base installation. Unless you have a special need for a full text index of all local files, I recommend disabling it.

   * In Control Panel
   * Select Add / Remove Programs
   * Select Add / Remove Windows Components
   * Uncheck the Indexing Service

or simply change the Indexing Service from Automatic to Manual in the Services manager console.

I have mine disabled in Servies manager console.

[No wonder you have problems with your images being over managed you have all these programs managing them. ]

should have seen before new harddrive, lol

I am down to ten, I turned vptray back on because I think thats my norton icon that I use to get updates, it reminds me by being in task bar.

I went to add remove wind. components but the Indexing Service was already unchecked. I did uncheck a couple things while in there, like win messenger.

from bigR-

[From what I can see, you have two basic problems-The second problem is MS Find Fast,.]

1. OK I unchecked find fast.

2. Thats what I have been complaining about, too many media managers, like that quicktime, I was offered no choice, I checked to only use for qt movies but it still took over my image files.

How can I turn these photoshops/media managers off?

Whats new: NERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I tried my free lightscribe burner and found it doesn'st burn at all, it prints instead so I had no choice, its NERO and not roxio. I let NERO add their photo junk to undo the corrupt files quicktime caused. I can configure nero later, it has lots of configuration options.

BBBBIIIIGGGGG FFIIINNNDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found something pretty big toward the end of the nero install that may be the root to all my previous problems,

there was a boxed pre-checked, a choice asking "should this program open every disc inserted?"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Nero, that is just plain stupidity! What the heck do you think happens when people put discs in? MORONS! No wonder my game quit working. Anyway, I palyed my game last night after the nero install.

Thankyou rb and bigR!!!!! I do appreciate this help, you guys did me a lot of good. I can't believe what I had on here before, is so bad its funny. You guys don't even know the half of it, I had so much junk running before its a wonder my pc worked at all.

It depends on the program. Usually, you can find somewhere (sometimes buried in various Advanced buttons and tabs) a setting to load or not load at startup, and settings to take over file associations, and a setting to see if it's the default program for opening certain file types.

The only way I know of to turn them off is to go through the Preferences or Options, or Customization, and look at every single dadgum tab and button and Advanced button. Check everything!

The other advice I have is to always do a custom installation of software. That way you have some chance of catching these things before they're installed. But, as above, you have to click every tab, every + sign and every Advanced button to see what's there and find all the tricky ways of hiding settings.

Heh, maybe that's why it takes me so long to install any new piece of software. I spend 20 minutes poring over every customization setting!  Rolling Eyes

rb, all that junk came with pc, and you saw it after I deleted most of the junk, so people buying PCs don't know anything about it other than troubles they cause.

Big R, after having problems with video capture I read somewhere to check my cd that came with camera to get the proper drivers etc., what I didn't do last year. So I installed and seems to be ok. I haven't used it and don't plan to but it also has a video capture, movie editor etc. which I may have to check out. So I am in a bind, I need the driver but not the software, and most softwares, like nero, do offer configuration on what you get, but if you don't except it all you will be missing files. Been there done that a million times.

I had media managers, two in roxio, in windows, in hp, in hp printer, hp scanner, adobe, nero, and many many more. I tried only getting what I wanted in nero and had to go back and reinstall the rest anyway because things wouldn't work right. They do that on purpose.

I've been learning a lot, thanks to you guys, but I have a long ways to go. I still want to learn more about codes and making webages and still hanging over my head waiting for me. I found some great tools in bravenet last nite, like page te,plates and codes etc which will be a great help. I used to have bravenet forum but they were lagging, but now they are way agead of things. They also have a greeat map that lets people pin where they live and leave a comment, I want that, been wanting for a long time but forget about it, but you all might be interseted ihn getting one for this forum.
