rb, have you ever tried to retreave anything from nero backup? If so, how did you do it? It takes me in circles and can;t decompress the image files. No other program will open them.
I am still thinking about weather I want nero or not. I backed up some files on dvd and cdrw and can't open them on this laptop either. Kindof worries me.

No, Dave, I have not, sorry. Sounds like something to ask of the Nero tech help. I think I would be worried too....
I'll look around the web and see if I can find some answers for you, I think just recently I read about someone else having a problem reading stuff he had backed up on a DVD.
But in the meantime I really would contact Nero if I were you, I think that's your best bet. If need be send them the DVDs and have them retreive the files for you.

Ya that rings a bell, and doesn't sound good. maybe I'd better not reinstall nero. I don't know what to do now, nero or roxio, both have severe problems.

I thought you pretty much had that solved by letting one do a part of the job and the other do the other part of the job?
But what about getting your stuff off the DVDs, are you able to do that yet or not?
BTW, Dave, did you install the memory you have on hand while you were changing out the HDD?! I don't know that it would solve all your problems but more memory would help make everything work better.

RB, my memory card was the wrong one, it was for my old pc so didn't install, but, my pc is super fast now.
No I haven't retrieved the DVD backup. I changed my computer sign-in name, and from what I read I will have to start a new user with my old name to get stuf back. Luckially, I did a second backup, which is the one that won;t work so I only lost a few things since most recent backup failed. I just can't get it on laptop, thinking about adding a user on there first to see if that idea even works.
I found what I was looking for yesterday, what nero help didn't tell me, which is there is a free version of lightscribe I can get without the whole nero package.
I am still trying to decide. Want to know whats on my mind? Here goes -
Nero - lots of great features, burns well at first but then has conlicting problems. The DVD movie maker is great, but it too konked out, I need my second DVD drive, but now I find I can get software from web; ...sure seems scary with their backup flaws, I see lots of other people having problems.
Roxio - works great burning things, but the DVD movie maker won't work, so I would also need to install roxio 6 with the roxio 8. Maybe I should try things again, maybe this would work with some configuring, maybe I gave up too soon. The bad thing is I sold my roxio 6, and the buyer sent me an illegal copy when I asked to buy it back.
I wish my adobe dvd movie maker worked, maybe I should try again. Either way, I still need a burn program, or maybe my RECORD NOW would work. The adobe makes clips in a professional manner, but it fails when I try to burn these clips in their dvd maker. They even tell you in the book that these won;t work because of windows conflicts. Maybe I should work on adobe more.
One last thing, I am waiting to decide so I will have more days to "go back" to recover in case I run into problems again.
