I'm still working on copying a DVD from a previously written DVD.  I posted this over here because it is not about recieving or giving information about PC Stuff.  It's about the people that you connect with and the path you take in trying to educated yourself about the topic.  I started out going in small, dizzying circles but now have widened my path out to larger, less stressful circles.  My learning curve has improved much since I increased the angle of my trajectory of learning.  I am down to only 46 solutions to my question.  On my second post I got 23 questions back for my one question submitted.  Of course everyone has their own personal preferences as to which software program works best and this by nature leads to conflicting answers to the same question.  My original question was "How do I check to see if my "D:" Drive is working correctly"?  You wouldn't believe how far afield from the original question we wandered.  I appreciate the help being offered but sometimes it can be very confusing to a semi-newbie such as me.  I finally posted a reply saying that if I could answer some of the highly technical questions as
were being submitted, I wouldn't need to post there.  I was very diplomatic about it but I lost some of the posters after that.  I figured that those that got offended and dropped out didn't have my best interests at heart anyway.  I explained that I was very limited in my comprehension of "Computer Stuff".

By the time that I resolve this question I will be very knowledgeable about this one subject.  That is how my Computer knowledge runs:  Very good in a few topics but very limited in all other .  One thing that Rosalie and Blake have taught me is patience.  Don't give up and stay with a topic until I learn what i need to know.  What a guy I am!!  A St. Bernard of patience and  a Chiuahua of brain.  No offense meant towards Chiuahuas.  I just meant size-wise.

I've had some trouble burning my W2K image to DVD.  So I think I'm going to download Nero 7 and see if that works better than 5.5 for files this large.  I really would like a hard copy of my image just in case the worst occurs...

I admire your perception on what has gone on so far.  However ...

Sticking to a project and beating a dead horse are two different things.  It just may be possible you won't be able to copy that DVD you are determined to copy.  At least consider that.  It will free up your mind to try a few things.

First of all I don't think you ever told us if the D drive does indeed work.  Or if you ever found out if it works.  Remember I suggested that you insert a blank DVD-R disk and see if you can burn stuff using Nero.  Or whatever program you are using for burning.  Try burning some images or just any old folder of stuff off your HDD.  If it works we will know your D drive works.  It is the D drive isn't it?

Yes.  You are correct in that I have to determine if my "D" Drive (my DVD burner) is woking right first.  I have D/L several other programs that I will try one at a time.  They are AnyDVD, CloneDVD,  DVDDecrypter and DVDFab Decrypter.  Some of them are 21 day trial programs.  After trying to determine if my "D" Drive is working OK I'll try the free programs first.

PS.  When I tried burning the movie from my "C" Drive to my "D" Drive a popup window told me to insert a DVD+R disk into my "D" Drive.  I don't believe that it will accept a DVD-R disk.

Bobby I did some searching on that DVD Shrink after reading how great it is and found this review.  Read down the page.  Seems you need some more "stuff" for it to work correctly.  Were you aware of that?

Review

One of those trial programs may do a better job for you.  But by all means first find out if the drive works.  I have a feeling that it works just fine.

Of course it will.  Why wouldn't it?  So put in a DVD+R.  Not much difference between the two as I understand it

Question:

What is the difference between the DVD-R and DVD+R formats?

Answer:

DVD-R (pronounced "DVD dash R") and DVD+R (pronounced "DVD plus R") are nearly identical formats. The discs look the same and are both supported by most DVD-ROM drives and DVD burners. The only difference between the formats is the way they determine the location of the laser beam on the disc. DVD-R discs use tiny marks along the grooves in the discs, called land prepits, to determine the laser position. DVD+R discs do not have land prepits, but instead measure the "wobble frequency" as the laser moves toward the outside of the disc.

The DVD-R format was developed by Pioneer and was released in the second half of 1997. DVD+R was developed by Sony and Philips and was introduced in 2002. Companies that support DVD-R include Pioneer, Toshiba, Hitachi, and Panasonic, while companies that support DVD+R include Sony, Philips, Hewlett-Packard, Ricoh, and Yamaha.

However, most of these companies now develop hybrid DVD drives that support both DVD-R and DVD+R formats. They are known as DVD±R or DVD±RW drives. When looking for media for your DVD drive, make sure it ends in "-R" if you have a DVD-R drive or "+R" if you have a DVD+R drive. If you have a DVD±R drive, you can use either format. DVD-R is still more popular than DVD+R, but since they are both widely supported, it should not matter which format you choose.
