I guess I'm a lot like gdatuk.  Sometimes I just want to dig around and see if I can repair or find the fault with a program or problem rather than just remover or reinstall.

In my case when I have so much to learn sometime the time spent on investigating and experimenting is well worth the time just for the learning I get out of it.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with learning new stuff.  Far from it.  In fact, I think it is good to learn and expand your knowledge.  Since there wasn't a deadline to retrieve the file, then there was no hurry in getting the job done.  That left plenty of time to learn different methods of retrieving the file.  But once all options are exhausted, then the tried and tested method of redownloading the file turned out to be the best option this time...

There are companies that make a lot of money retrieving deleted and lost data off of HDDs.  So it is good to know ways to do so.  A person would then have the ability to monopolize off of that knowledge...

ya..there are a lot of companies which do them for ya professionally. also recently there was a lull about harddisks brought over ebay were salvaged and sensitive data recovered and sold illegally. so how do u think we can dispose off our hard disk safely...

and all there deleted data lying around in clusters...decrease the system speed! apart from defragmenting....what do ya think the best way to increase sys performance!

I've tried several things to try to increase the system speed, but some provide very little, if any, noticable difference.  These are the tricks that are supposed to help that I use:
  • Create a separate Page File partition and point the Windows to use it instead of the one in the OS root.  The partition doesn't need to be any larger than 4 GB max since that is the largest file size W2K and XP can handle.  In W95 and W98, the max is only 2 GB...

  • Move all non-OS related files to another partition so that the OS partition remains relatively defragmented at all times.  This helps a bit.  Just leave the Winnt, Program Files, Docs and Settings, and all Windows System Files on the OS partition.  You would still install your programs into the Program Files folder though...

  • Remove all non-critical programs from the Windows Startup folder.  Only launch programs that you will always want to be running during the OS bootup...

  • Decrease the size of the OS partition to improve seek times...

  • Make sure that there is at least 25% free space on the OS partition...

  • Make sure you have plenty of RAM.  Your OS will work with the minimum requirements, but probably not well.  These days, 1 GB of RAM is probably the minimum you should have...

  • Get a good Resource Recovery program to maintain your system resources at all times.  I recommend MemTurbo, but there may be others that work just as well or better...

  • Replace slow CPU with faster processor...
What did I miss?  Anyone else???
