I just saw a segment on today show about shutterfly, vertrue, affinion selling your credit card numbers to shopping membership clubs. Becarefull when you buy online, if you get an offer while checking out it is probably one of these sites. I saw one of these clubs the other day that someone in twitter recomended and I thought it looked suspicious.

No link yet but if I find anything I will post one later.

Yeah I've seen that.  You have to read and read and read.  Always be SURE of what you're doing before you click.  I buy a lot from Buy.com and yes that ad does pop up once you're finished.  I too thought it was some deal from Buy.com until I read the fine print and found out if you accept this offer you sign up for a club membership that charges a monthly fee.  Apparetly these people are so eager to  get the "free" $10 off they don't bother reading the fine print.  ALWAYS read the fine print.  The disclosure is there if you look.

They are banking that few people actually read the small print.  And those who do will stop reading before they get to the end where it says that they will be billed if they continue.  It is deceptive because they hide their charges in small print and dangle a free offer in their faces.  Most people would think that the company they just purchased from is rewarding them for being their customer.  I can see why these schemes are so successful...

There is no defense for this type of deceptive practice, people trust the site they are buying from enough to give their c card number and shouldn't have to read fine print. They in fact sell your credit card number. I would not buy from any site that did this if I could help it. I would also write and complain because apparently no one does.
