How's Your Hard Drive Doing?
Hard drives are about as dependable as a teenager promising to come home by midnight. The more you know about your drive--the brand-specific idiosyncrasies and the diagnostic sounds that drives produce--the better prepared you are for the inevitable crash.
CrystalDiskInfo.
The tool will show you the number of hours logged on your hard drive and give you its health status. If you see caution or bad, cancel all your appointments and replace the drive, like, immediately, even if you don't hear any weird sounds from the drive.
If you listen to your hard drive, all you should hear is a soothing, comforting hum. Yet drives often make weird sounds--thuds, screeches, knocking, or whining -- and determining if a sound means trouble can be, well, troubling.
That homepage really doesn't have much info, click on the word Manual (next to Download) and when on that page more link in the menu at the top.

Hard drive sounds
DataCent, a data-recovery company, has an extraordinarily helpful site that plays the actual sounds of flaky hard drives: stuck spindles, bad or unstable heads, bad bearings, and bad media, to name a few. You can listen to your specific drive brand, too. Even better, the data recovery company lists typical drive failures by manufacturer.

LOL, I almost choked on my coffee!
I haven't install this program yet but I probably will. I don't know about running it constantly, that's about all I need another program running in the back ground! My poor little System Tray already has 13 icons sitting in it.
What I would value it for would be to test a suspicious HDD. The HDD in one of my other machines behaves strangely sometimes ... well OK most of the time! LOL ... and I'm anxious to run this program on that machine to check out it's health.

No, I also believe the same as you. This little program isn't designed to fix anything however, it just shows you any problems your HDD may be having. The "fixing" is left up to you.
Did you listen to any of those sounds from bad HDDs on that 2nd site? One sounds like an old car about to fall apart and one sounds like a lawnmower! LOL I think if my HDD sounded like that I wouldn't need a program to tell me I'm headed for trouble!

| Mine still makes noises. Getting worse again, after being quiet for a few months. I think its bad bearings after listening to samples. Humidity seems to affect it. |
