I just installed a second hd in my newer desktop, it shows in my hardware wizard as installed but it says READ at the end of the name and I am not seeing it in my computer drives.

I have the plug set on slave. What am I doing wrong? It has the older serial plug but I doubt that matters.

The white plug in in the slave slot, seems I have this in the wrong place?

The hardware name is WDC WD 1600JB-55READ and it is a western digital 160 gig.

It says reao , not read. It shows up in hardware devices and in local disc properties, says device is working properly, the drivers are ok, all is fine except there is no drive letter in my drive list so I can't use it.

Do you mean ATA?  Is your other HDD a SATA?  Not sure but if you mix types you may need to install drivers for your 2nd HDD.

Does the 2nd HDD show up in BIOS? As a Slave?

In case both HDD are ATA check the jumper setting on the 1st HDD.  If it is set as CS (Cabel Select) than your second one needs to be set as CS also.  The main HDD plugs into the end of the cable and the slave into the plug about half way down the ribbon.

You probably know all that already, just checking.

BTW, that READ you say is at the end of the name ... are you sure that isn't RAID?  I don't think you want it installed as RAID.

If someone doesn't come along with the solution to your problem quickly you may have to try the WD Support.  I'm sorry I can't help more but HDDs have gotten so varied and tricky I no longer understand them. LOL  Lately I've solved any HDD problems by trial and error.  Mostly error.

The original hd is a sata, but I noticed the MB has a plug in for the wide strip ata so I figured I would use this new hd sitting here that has the ata plugin.

It shows up everywhere except there is no drive letter to access it.

It says REAO at the end,        WDC WD1600JB-55REAO

Is there more than one?  I don't know if they are specifically for HDD and CD-ROM but if there are more than one .. one will be numbered 1 on the mobo and the other will have a 2 by it.  1 is usually for the HDD.

I have no idea what REAO may mean.  Sorry.  Is that something added by Windows? It's not written on the HDD itself?  Just trying to figure out if the REAO is meant as an error or what ...

No its JB and it is a 2nd hd, but its plugged into mb via an ata plugin and the other is sata.

Don't worry about it, I really don't even need it, I'm just playing and was wondering what the problem was. I imagine if I buy a sata hd it will work just fine.

Hummmm, did you notice at that link I gave you over the the left there  is a link for Special Edition/JB.

It goes to Knowledge Base page where you can refine your search and also some FAQ.

You may be able to find something there that will help.

This may be a stupid question but did you reboot after the HDD was installed by Windows?  Or did Windows even install it after you booted up the first time?

After plugging in the HDD and booting up did Windows find and install "A New Device"?

Yes I rebooted, and it did instal it ok it just doesn't show in the drive letters, nor does it show in any menu to save to or send to.

i also unplugged the HD, then left the ac plugged in since I had unplugged the power cable and read where it should be plugged in during installation, which doesn't make sense. But anyway I plugged the ac in and then reconnected the HD, booted a couple more times and nothing.

I am thinking that slot/pluggin on my MB is for - if I decided to go with ata for the first HD and not use my sata wires, I don't know why they even have it on there really. It doesn't seem to connect completely otherwise so maybe its one or the other and I can't use sata and ata both.
