I have come to the conclusion that the only program on my PC that will play my DVD is Nero Show Time. That's fine but I have to launch Nero Show Time first and tell it to play the DVD. Otherwise when I put the DVD in the tray in a few seconds this message comes up:
Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied.
And nothing launches. Solution?

I found this article on that error, I don't have the line that starts with "old base components" but I did everything else they said, rebooted and I still get the same error.
http://www.smartcomputing.com/techsupport/detail.aspx?guid=&ErrorID=22 036
However, I don't get the error when I pop in a CD, I get it when I pop in a DVD and the error just started poping up recently.

Also found this site, doesn't seem to be for W2K however ....
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
And what the heck does this mean:
NOTE: This problem only affects programs whose executable files are located in folders within the Program Files folder.
Where else would the executable files be??

Reading this thread, my exact problem.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=105393
I don't have .dvd extention in my File Type either, I do have this: That is the only reference to DVD
Not sure I want to mess with the registry if I can help it. I might go look just to see what kind of player DVD points to.

I have pretty much what the guy is talking about but I don't know that I'm ready to do what he did! Not even sure I would know how.

The other guy says:
The way to fix this is to use REGEDT32 (not REGEDIT) to delete the REG_SZ type key and create a REG_EXPAND_SZ type key. Note that REGEDIT does not support the REG_EXPAND_SZ type.
Just which REG_SZ is he talking about? The AudioCD is not a problem. Would I change the second one? Things never look just the way they say they do.

If a file type is not included in Folder Options, you can always add a new one by pressing the New button and adding all the details...

Sounds easy. But ...... K, there is Extension and File Type. What would I put in each catagory?
What the heck is the extension for a movie on dvd anyway?
I have a dvd with music on it and when I put it in the tray I don't get the error. Actually I don't get anything, no error and nothing launches. I can open Windows Media Player, go to File and Open then click on one of the songs and it plays. But nothing is auto, the same song will play over and over until I choose another one.

Without looking at the files on the DVD, I can't even begin to guess what the file type is. You should be able to look at it in Explore though...
