I was in my control panel looking around, didn't change anything, and now I get this:

What the heck is going on? I contacted help, this can't be, my forum just disapeared because I was looking in host controlpanel.

I am having problems with avatars, so I was looking at forum in xi cp, and I didn't do anything but look.

I tried logging out but didn't help. What a bad start today.

Never mind, I rebooted and got it back. I guess I can't use two windows anymore while in IX cp.

Anyway, as long as I made this thread, I will update - I am having problems with my avatar, it won't work, when I click to add it I get strange code at top saying I can't do this in my head tag or something.

There are files corrupted I need to get fixed. I will keep looking around trying to fix my screw ups from first day. I really didn't do much, but I did uncompress a few files and clicked to htaccess a couple files.

One other thing, I joined forum as fishead besides my main sign in name dtackett. I went to email to get conformation and none was there.

So I tried signing up as fisheads and different email, but no email came to activate.

So I went in and had to manually add fishead as a member. Thats fine but do I have to do that with every member? Why doesn;t it send emails?

Then the avatar won't show and I get that code above window for a few seconds that says can't add this to head tags or something., then opens but no avatar.

If anyone wants to go in and I would appreciate it. For the most part I need to learn all this stuff myself but this avatar problem is over my head.

You have done a lot more than I have, I wish I could be of some help but it's all beyond me right now. I do know a lot depends on permissions so all I can suggest is that the fishead or dtackett be given all permission.

Please keep us all updated on your progress.

I imagine your avatar problem is caused by not having the images/avatars folder permissions set to 777. Any folder where you allow members to upload files to your server should be set to 777. But since the 777 permission is a very dangerous permission to use, most of your folder permissions should be set to 755. You should set your cache folder to 777 too...

I Changed the files to 777 but still not working. It won't let me change a folder so maybe I need to change the avatar folder but accessing the ftp vie the host cp there is no option to change it vie folder that I can see anyway. Sad

I still can't login using ws ftp pro Sad

Also did a test user - it tells you when you join that is will send you an email but so far no email. Fishead it might be the email your using to send the emails I am not sure.

Fishead have you called your host about the ftp yet? If not ask about the email problem as well maybe they can help figure it out.

I have to go - will work on this with you more tomorrow. Smile

No, change ALL the file permissions back to 644. Change most folder permissions to 755. The only exceptions should be the cache and images/avatars folders, as well as any other folder where you allow members to upload files to the server. So since this is a new site and nothing additional has been installed, there are only 2 folders that should be set to 777. All other must be set to 755...

I did manage to get an avatar to work by listing the url of image from my site. Otherwise, uploading avatar doesn't work. Last night I saw a warning notice in cp of IX. So I deleted it. I went in to forum to see if that helped nut still can't upload avatar from my pc to forum.

The sign in problem started when i signed up as fishead, I used my same email address as my other name and this did something and stopped working, I think, not sure what caused it but thats what I was doing. I went in this morning and changed my email to other for that name.

I used a different email when I signed up as test - (you can delete that acct) and I did not get an email Sad

As for the avatar something is stopping it from uploading the the avatar folder I could not figure it out Sad

I got the FTP working, IX help sent me an address to use and it works fine it appears, haven't used it yet but it connected ok.

I saw the test, and I will delete later when we're done. I contacted IX help about the forum email problems with new member activation, so we will see if they can help with that too.
