Google Offering Free Software Package
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Google Inc. is making its word processing and spreadsheet programs available for free to all comers on its Web site, marking the Internet search leader's latest effort to provide an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s dominant software applications.
The software package, expected to be available Wednesday, combines a spreadsheet application that Google introduced in June with a word processing program called Writely that the Mountain View-based company bought for an undisclosed amount in March.
As part of the expansion, the Writely name will disappear. The new package will be called Google Docs & Spreadsheets.
I hope that Word Processor has improved. I tried it several months ago at their invite and while it was ok I wasn't exactly crazy about it and not something I would use if I didn't have to.

| Google is really good at a lot of things but they are also very bad at a lot of things. Like their video website, it is so bad they decided to buy youtube. |

Even though I don't trust them completely, I really like most of what Google is doing. I'm not sure that I would trust them with my documents though. I wonder if you can use their software but store the documents on your PC? Even then, their software would have a record of everything that you have worked on....

I don't know how that really works. I was thinking you would just use their software and save the doc on your HDD. If they somehow managed to keep a copy of your work they sure would have a lot of data to store, I'm sure millions will be using it. Yet, they say you can access and work on your docs from anywhere on any PC don't they? That sounds like it would be accessible on the net. Don't know .... need to learn more.

If you can access your Google Docs from any PC anywhere in the world, then they would be stored on the Google servers. They have no storage limitations, so it wouldn't be a big deal for them to store your docs too...
