Have downloaded Windows XP 64 bit .
Need to divide my hard disk to have space to try out this system without
formating the hole hard disk. Has any body got any ideas Â

I am not sure if it's very smart to partition the disk just to try out the
XP64b... Anyway, it's been quite a while since I partinioned any disks.
Does someone remember how it's done (without loosing all the current
data) so my friend can install that other Operating System? |

There is nothing wrong with partitioning the HDD for another OS. Acronis Patition Expert or a utility of that type would make it a snap. Other wise you may look here (below), using Control Panel. I'm not sure you can partiton but you sure can do a lot. I'm sure Blake, the expert, will be along before too long and tell you exactly how to do it.

It won't harm anything if they add another partition to their HDD. Of course, if the current partition is the same size of the HDD, they will first need to resize the first partition to make room for the second. I don't recomment any partition larger than 20-30 GB, so very large HDDs may end up with as many as 6-8 partitons...
To add a new partition to an existing HDD, you would use a good Partitioning program. Like rb, I recommend Acronis TrueImage. Acronis PartitionExpert is now part of TrueImage but it isn't nearly as obvious as having a separate program. If you can get your hands on PartitionExpert, I would say go for it...
Before resizing an existing partition and adding a new one, I highly recommend that the user defrags the affected partitions first. It may not make a difference, but why take the chance???

And XP has its own partitioning utility, which claims it can repartition without losing data. I used XP's utility to partition this hard drive (200G) into 4 partitions of varying sizes, but I did that before putting any files on it. I haven't tried repartitioning an existing hard drive that contains data. |

Partitioning a HDD that already contains data can be a scary and dangerous process, so it is always a good idea to get a good backup of your partition before you start and that backup would be best saved on CD or DVD, or another PC or HDD. I have stored images of partitions on separate partitions on the same HDD, then lost all partitions on the HDD even though I was only working on one. Actually I think I lost the whole HDD, so my backups were worthless and I had to start from scratch after I replaced the HDD...
I have never used XP's partitioning tool, so I can't vouch for it. Being that I don't like or trust any M$ product, I would try to find some other Partitioning program if possible...

Wow! what a great thread! I have been wondering about thisvery thing... SwissCheese, do you happen to remember if your friend did this, and what happened?
I am considering partitioning mine, and running a server on the other part to test DB and PHP stuff, but I don't know if it's a safe thing to do, I am learning as much as I can first...
thanks |

Hi TieDyeQueen... this discussion started here and then continued
in the RafikiTalk Community PC Talk Forum...
I'm not quite sure how SamCapone solved his issue...
Maybe you would like to read the Topic at RafikiTalk too?
You can click here to check out the How can I divide my hard disk?
Topic at RafikiTalk... Maybe you will find some more info there
I'm not sure if you can post messages to that Topic as
a guest but in case you cannot, you are of course very
welcome to join RafikiTalk...

TDQ, if you want to partition your HDD, I would be more than happy to walk you through the process if I can...
