Not denying long working hours, low pay, child labor and all the other charges ... however I'm sure that isn't unique to Foxconn.  More like a way of life in China.  And Apple is not the only company Foxconn supplies.

In the comments one of the people blames the large insurance policies (large by China's standards) as contributing to the suicides.  There may be something to that ...

Chinese factory workers have incentives to kill themselves on the job

All these articles are heartbreaking but I don't think the solution to these problems is in the hands of Apple, HP, IBM or any other company but rather in the hands of China.  This is really tough, if these American companies pull out of China and bring their business back to America that will be good for Americans (more jobs) but then all those people in China, I think somewhere in the neighborhood of about 400,000 I read) would be out of jobs.  Would that be better or worse for them?

Well we can't worry about them bring the jobs back before our country crumbles even worse. But that will never happen. If they had better rights for workers then we might be able to compete. That second link was the story for our news which was light, and the first link tells the whole story. The media is always trying to keep things from us.

If those jobs/factories were in America the components they make would probably cost 3 or 4 times as much raising the price of a computer (or whatever device used them).  There will always be one or companies that will continue to get components from China and keep the cost of their device down.

If you were faced with two computers containing the exact same components and one was $400 and the other $900 which would you buy?

The company selling the $900 computer would soon go out of business.  OR have to start buying it's components from a factory in China in order to compete with the company sell it's PC for $400.

I don't think the insurance policies Foxconn purchased for their employees were “Dead Peasant” insurance, were they?  I think the families/spouse were the beneficiaries.

That is true, we can't compete with slave labor in china, and this article shows how they do it.

I would be surprised if the companies had their insurance on workers, but I found that link in the comment section. There is a long list of companies that do it.

All kinds of ways to make a buck if one has no conscience isn't there?

By the way, hooks, swivels and other terminal tackle has went up about 300% this last couple years and I doubt its because Chinese labor went up, companies are just greedy. Some companies they pay CEOs a million dollars a day to sit around and figure out ways to make more money by taking advantage of workers, buy the media, buy the supreme court, how to buy polititions and how to get bigger tax breaks.
