I just finished modifying the phpBB code so that the "Log me on automatically each visit" box is checked by default. Please let me know if this new feature works correctly for you...

Thanks for trying to help out in this login issue.
I use SlimBrowser and come in with it's Autologin feature, so I probably won't use the forum setting for autologin.

I use Opera and use it's automatic login feature too. But for those who are using less feature rich browsers, this Auto Login option could come in handy. It wasn't a difficult modification, so if it helps just one member, it was worth it...
