Create an image of what you have now before you start. If anything goes terribly wrong during the upgrade, you can always restore your image and be back to where you started...

Its my internet pc so there really isn't anything to backup and its new too, none the less, it sounds risky and a pain. I will wait and see how it goes for other people and post in here what I find out.

But it is still working correctly right now. So you should create an image first so that if the update causes serious problems, you can restore the image and be back to where you are right now. Otherwise, you may end up having to start over from scratch...

What software do you use to get your hd image? I need one.

I use Acronis True Image. You would need to install this in Windows, then burn a boot CD. Once you have a working copy of TI on a bootable CD, you can uninstall it from Windows. Both Rosalie and I use this to create all of our images, so if you have any trouble understanding how to use it, either one of us can help you through it...

I'm not understanding this, I open compressed file, I get a .exe file, a txt file and an english folder, I click on the .ex file and it opens another folder with a .ex file a txt file and another english folder with keys for icons. If I back up and open the english folder it has the .ex files and if I click on any I get another set of file txt and english folders.

I am thinking reformatting is easier than trying to save the files. I can reformat in a couple hours. If I did get this image thing to work I would have to partition hd or buy another external wouldn't i? All this takes much longer than 2 hours and costs more money. This is only my internet pc, not really anything worth saving that isn't backed up already. I think this image hd is good for my main pc but both burners are inoperative until I can afford to replace them again. Even if I replace them I don't know if the burners will work because they are new burners, just wrong brand or its something else.

This is what you should see in the archive:

All you need to do is extract these files to a folder. Then run the TrueImage11.8101_s_en.exe to install True Image 11. I believe near the end of the install process, it asks you if you want to burn a boot CD, which you would want to do. If not, you can do this after the program is installed...

You cannot store an image on the same partition that you are imaging. So you would either have to store the image on a separate partition or on a different internal or external HDD. Before you create an image, you would want to make sure that there is enough free space to store the image. Images can be as large or larger than 4 GB depending on how much you have installed/stored on the partition that you are imaging...

It only takes a few minutes to restore an image. It can take hours/days to reinstall everything from scratch, so it is almost always much easier and faster to restore an image than to have to start over from scratch...

If you need a program to create a new partition to your current HDD, I can help you with that too...

When I unzip the folder all I see is one file, a tx file and then a subfolder, that is what makes it confusing. I think I need to pull everything out of the subfolder and move up one layer to be with the other.

This laptop has 160 gigs free so I could make a small partition. I would need software to do that, I don't have any.

Here is what I am seeing using windows to unzip:
