My activity light keeps blinking away like there is something going on but there isn't. Its so bad I keep restarting to get it to stop. It started doing this soon after my last windows update.

crtll alt delete shows nothing running. Anyone have a clue about this? Do I need to worry about it?

I do need to defragment.  dontknow

edit - ok after 5 minutes it finally stopped. It did that early today so I rebooted and then after on line awhile it started doing it again. Someone is transferring data I swear.

It's very possible that your PC has been compromised and someone is using it as a node in a spam network.  You really need to make sure all of your anti-virus and spyware definitions are up to date, then scan the hell out of your PC.  Hopefully if your PC has been compromised, one of the scanners will detect and fix it for you...

So did you run your anti-virus program too?  Do you have Ad-Aware and if so, did you run it?  Do you have any anti-trojan software???

I uesd to keep my Automatic Updated turned on and one day my PC started acting strangely.  I checked back to see what updates had been installed and on the date that an nVidea-nForce update was installed was when my problems started.  It turned out that nVidea-nForce had D/L a corrupted file.  When I went back and corrected it I stopped having any further problems.  If you have Auto Updated turned on it mught be a good idea to check which updates were installed around the time that you Activity light started showing activity.

If you haven't found the cause of your Activity light misfunction yet you might want to double-check you updates for Spybot S&D and AdAware.  Spybot had 6 updates for March and two for January.  Spybot has a "Recovery" button for restoring your PC to a selected date before the latest updates were installed.  If your problem coincides with the installation datr of an update that might give you a clue as to the problem.

Programs running in the background will not show up... It could be just your computer writing your previous actions to the hdd.... If all your security programs are functioning . Then you need to run MS config and see what you have running in start up or running in the background that you don't need

Thanks for the input.

Katie I did try to see what was running and nothing showed. I was surprized I got the windows update the following day, but I think that is where the problem is, windows update.

I get an auto adobe update too, but only when I open it or close. It could be my HD transfering files, I have about .... a ton of video on here, probably 200 gigs is used up out of 300. Maybe more.
