I recently bought a Compaq Presario for a backup PC. It had Windows Vista Home Basic installed on it. While setting it up I immediately noticed a warning: "Windows Vista must be activated within 30 days of purchase or it may cease to function". I went through the simple activation process and entered my Product Key ibto the correct box and clicked 'submit". I immediately recieved a message telling me that my Product Key was not a valid key. I contacted HP/Compaq Support in India and talked to a non-English speaking person with a low. low volume control. After an hour of useless and miserable procrdures I gave up and went online for help. I talked to two Support People in chat sessions with no good results. The last one tried to convince me to use an application that would wipe my HDD clean. After much time and effort I finally got to a Microsoft site called the Windows Vista Activation Team. In less than five minutes I was given a 25 digit number to enter into the Product Key box and my Vista was immediately activated.
