Because I am trying to set up a website I have to figure out how to set things so they render properly in as many browsers as possible.

Because of my Day One support group I hang out on a Better Homes and Gardens discussion board.
It has always worked great in IE,  when you turn off show images there are placeholders with square X's but everything stays in line. Actually I don't see all ads.
I went there in Opera and turned off images and everything went screwy where pictures are suppose to be the alt words overlap everything else horribly.  I guess I shouldn't feel too bad if my site is off cause I'm just a program user and those guys are high paid techies.
I have only had foxfire a couple days so havn't been able to try it without images on their site. (where do you do that?)

I'm on Opera right now and I am seeing on this board that if I turn off images things get stretched out but instead of the highlight users post icon I see the alt  "you have posted in this topic" and the words do not overlap the topic as the topic just moves over.  Do this on my phpbb's in Opera and things overlap horribly.
So there must be a command I need to employ but what is it? And would it go in the header or .css on the phpbb's and would it go into the header or body of the webpages? (I'm thinking header on webpages).

Because I am setting things up to see if I can eventually find a way I'm comfortable with to go commercial I do need to cater to IE as it has a large chunk of browser share.  But deep down in my soul I am open source.  When the footers go in they will include php, apache, mysql etc.

Why do you use the browser you are using?  If you use more than one, Then for what reasons?  I'm pretty sure most here are in the world of monzilla but I still want to hear the whys.  Ducking the rotton tomatos thrown for even mentioning IE  LOL

Also for those who dabble in  webpages.  Where do you go for help or just insight into the world of webpages?   My pages are still html.  I have found that if I don't want to go .css then I am just behind the times and not worth dealing with.   It's not that I am against .css but I do find the attitude a bit overkill, and I have heard that unless you have the latest and greatest browser .css don't always work well.  I'm catering to all not just the latest and greatest.

Well that is all for now.  Your thoughts?

I think I need more coffee. I feel like a kid is school again, everyone else gets it but I don't, I;m daydreaming again. Can't get focus on code. I did see css in firstpage yesterday after reading this yesterday I noticed it last nite but I don't know what its about, another language I guess, but why the need for so many..? Thats why I feel like a kid in school again, flunking.

I am stubborn and until recently never paid attention to browsers. I did try a new once but hated it, and only till recently did I try moz. firefox. It is about the same as ie7 I know now, but there was a few things I couldn't stand, like the extra clicks it takes, I have bad elbow and wrist now and don't need more clicks. I don't pay attention to what browsers see differently, sometimes its just best to be dumb to keep from pulling hair out.

I also don't understand all the different htmls. I tried to make a html with word yesterday, with an image background and all the pics I wanted, I then took it in to ebay to paste and none of the images came through. I guess I have to code these in from a hot link. Learning is hard for me. I can only do it for awhile, then take a break and do something else.

It’s not easy to make a site that is compatible with all browser and all screen resolutions.  Takes lot of trial and error.  I worked on my site for days trying to get it to look right, but gave up I figured I got it to look the best I could with all browsers and screen resolutions.

the file you edit depends on what part of the site you want to edit.  It has been a while since I worked on a phpbb board but I made my own layout for my board before I closed it.  I can help you if you want.

I use opera for a browser - the main reason I stopped using IE was because at the time IE did not offer tabs and I need the tabs.

When I first started learning html codes I found these sites helpful
This one I used a lot - http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/html/ and this one http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/

Here are some others I found helpful

I use Opera because it is the fastest browser available and because it is highly customizable, making it so that I can make the environment to suit my needs and tastes.  Perhaps if I ever get on broadband, the speed issue won't be nearly as important...

Another reason I chose Opera is because I refuse to help M$ turn the Internet into their own property and control.  M$ has tried and continues to do so, so thankfully browsers such as Netscape, Firefox, and Opera have stood in M$'s way.  Once M$ owns the Internet, stability, security, and innovation will go out the window.  Competition is always healthy, as we've seen with Intel and AMD, so it is important to make sure that M$ never succeeds in killing it...

Css files help make a central location to set formatting settings so that you don't have to go through all of your files to change hardcoded values whenever you make a small modification.  It is much easier modifying the settings in one file rather than a multitude of files.  Css files can be confusing until you understand how much they can simplify your life when maintaining your web pages...

Thanks for clearing the css up for me NR!

I am not happy with my ie, I don't need half the stuff and can't make it like I want setup. Maybe I should try opera. I know I don't like netscape, they filled my pc with a ton of junk I never could get rid of all of it. FF is ok, about the same as ie only more bugs. need worked out.

You can really customize Opera to look however you want.  My copy doesn't look anything like Opera right out of the box.  Have you found the Opera skins yet???

me too, i like opera, its my default browser, the opera has many options and you can customize it than other browser. But if your ISP so slow to load up the page, try mozilla firefox its faster to load up a high size of page.. But its up to you what is the best browser for your PC..
Waldo@sir nightrider: how are you sir nightrider? Hope your fine..

Yes I saw the skins, taking it slow for now. This morning I see my google bar is gone, but thats ok I guess. Don't know what happened, can't see where to change it back. Otherwise i like it, i don't know about those tabs though, getting tired of tabs myself, now that all browsers has them.

I really haven't been feeling that well lately.  I'm hoping that I can shake it off soon...
