How often do you back up your own sites?
How long do you keep old back ups for?

Hi Karen, I usually do the backups about 3 or 4 times a week but actually it should be at least once a day. Just ask yourself how many days of posts am I willing to lose? LOL
I don't think there is any need to keep more than two or three backups.
Oops, need to run make a backup.

Not only should you create backups of your database often, but you should make a backup of all of your phpBB files whenever you have made any significant changes. You want to make it so that you can quickly recover from even the most catastrophic failure. Don't count on your host to maintain good backups for you. Since you have the ability to control your own site, you should make sure that you never have to rely on a 3rd party to save you if things go south. Chances are, your host will let you down and you will be screwed...

Basically you can create your backups based on what you can afford to lose. If you wouldn't mind losing a week of posts, then you probably don't need to do a database backup but once per week at most. But if losing a day's worth of posts would be a significant loss to you, you might want to create several database backups per day. It's all a matter of how much you are willing to lose should things go south...

Backing up the data base is not too bad, with cable it takes about 20 minutes and you can do other stuff while it's backing up.
The phpBB2 folder is something else, LOL it takes well over an hour. Thank goodness Blake is no longer installing MODs on a daily bases so things don't change too much from day to day and there isn't a need to do that backup as often.

Using your FTP client (we use SmartFTP). Copy the contents to a folder on your HDD. Mine in being backed up now. Before I start the backup I exclude the cache folder, it's huge and totally unnecessary to back up. I include the date in the name of the folder. See below the first screen shot.
