Well Nascar Cup is over
For this year anyway
Stewart is the champion
And takes the prize today.

But a lump in my throat
Is causing me much pain
An era for me is ending
My driver has left pit lane.

He gave the sport attitude
Long before it was cool
He paid his fine in pennies
He was of the old school.

Not one of the YOUNG GUNS
But respected by them too
He was always in the hunt
And gave credit to his crew.

So goodbye Rusty Wallace
It won't ever  be the same
When I'm listening Sunday
And I won't hear your name.

I'm not a real big Nascar fan but I can imagine that the feeling would be the same for any sport.  Where have all the great football and baseball players gone?  They may be at the same place as the old great Nascar drivers.  I bet it's a hell of a party too...

Rusty Wallace's remarks during Sunday's drivers' meeting

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Rusty Wallace, who is retiring from full-time competition in the Nextel Cup Series this season, made the following remarks during Sunday's drivers' meeting:

"I just want to thank all of the competitors that are here today that I've raced with my whole career. I can remember when I came in it with Yarborough, Pearson, Petty and Earnhardt, that's when I was coming in. Now all those guys are all gone and I'm here and you guys are all here. It just feels funny.

This is my last race ever. I am retiring full-time. I just want to stop and thank all my peers and thank all you competitors for listening to me all year long and having to put up with this.

Kevin Harivck, I want to thank you for the kind words yesterday. That meant a lot to me. I remember when you were in trouble and I tried to help you. I think that's the reason you said those nice things.

It's been a great ride. It's been over 23 years of racing and I had a great time. You guys are awesome. We race hard together and I will never forget it the rest of my life. It means a lot. I'm looking at Todd (Bodine), we had some great races there. Dale (Jarrett), I know you've got a couple of more years but you'll be right behind me.

Tony (Stewart), you've been a hell of a personality this year, that's for sure. It's either going to be Carl (Edwards) or Tony or Jimmie (Johnson) or Greg (Biffle). One of you four is going to get this thing and whoever gets it, do your damndest to respect this sport because driving these cars is a privilege.

It's not something that we just do. Not many people get to do this and I'm grateful that I got to do it. You look in the room and you see all these great sponsors that put a lot of money behind us and work hard with us, That's a privilege to be involved with these people, too. It really is.

I'm looking forward to life after racing. I'm looking to a lot of cool things from the sport.

If I roughed anybody up along the way, I'm sorry. I didn't really mean it. Unless it paid more.

We had a good time. You guys have a great race today. Sponsors and NASCAR and the France family, thank you very much for 23 years of great racing and a lot of fun.
