I imagine that if you are used to speedy downloads, a download that takes more than a few hours can be a real PITA...

After you have successfully downloaded everything, you can empty everything in your messageboard/cache folder, except fot the index.html file, and you can remove all the installed MOD folders out of the admin/mods folder.  You don't need to re-upload them to the new server.  Just store them on your PC for backups...

well it finally downloaded. I'm going to hold off for a few minutes because I was told there's a quicker way to do it and he can have it up in a couple hours

In the control panel go to backups and click where it says "Download a home directory Backup" and on the same page click on your databases one at a time to download them. I my case there are 4

This is what he said

Quote:

Ok tried what he said above but he reckons there's a problem with the databases because the new host is using a different cpanel.

Anyway, going to forget that and follow your directions. I'm currently still uploading the files from my computer to the new host. So what do I have to do after this?

That's a shame.  It sounded promising...

Next, you can create a database in MySql in the IX CPanel.  After you are done, you will want to correct the settings in the config.php file to match the new database, username, and password.  Then once you have all the files and folders uploaded to your server, get a good backup of your old database in phpMyAdmin, then Import it back into the new database using the IX phpMyAdmin.  It may take quite a while to populate...

Once the database is fully populated, you would want to edit a few phpbb_config table entries.  Depending on what you've added to your board, there should be 3 or more settings that need to be adjusted to point to your new server.  For now, you can use the IP addy instead of the path to your old board.  I also change the Sitename setting by adding New, or like I did her IX, to the Sitename so that I can see which board is displaying.  Once you start switching over, it will be hard to tell which is whcih without a visual clue...

Once the database is fully populated and the phpbb_config table and config.php file settings have all been corrected, your new board should be live and good to go.  At that time, you should be able to change the DNS settings to point to IX.  It could take 24 hours before everyone is looking at the new board, so there may be people posting on both the old and new boards during that time.  AFter you are sure that everyone is looking at the new board, we can synchronize the two databases one last time to make sure that any posts added to the old board are transferred to the new database...

Well I have my mate doing database stuff. Not sure exactly what he's doing but he is having to modify some of the coding. Should be up and running in 1 or 2 hours he said. Fingers crossed.

He and I have been working on it for over 24hrs but he is doing so much work, it's incredible. I owe him so much.

Will keep you advised

Other than a few modications to the settings in the phpbb_config table, there shouldn't have been anything to modify in the database backup.  It can take forever to upload though, so I usually break it into many smaller pieces before importing them into the database.  It can be a painful process...

I hope all goes smoothly Glenn...
